Hi,

Can anyone advise me please.......my Yeti 1.2 TSI Elegance is just on 12 months old & 4500 miles. In the service book it says

"Next Inspection Service Due at (Variable) 20k, or October 2013"

I've had a letter today from the local Skoda who did warranty work, not the supplying dealer, saying a service is due.

I want to be sure I don't miss proper services. Anyone know the proper info please.

Servicing can be done variable or fixed.

Variable is two years or 20k miles, using higher quality long life oil.

Fixed is one year or 10k miles.

I always do fixed for the first year (as it's a new engine) and then switch to variable.

It sounds like the supplying dealer set the Yeti to variable (as they can choose, or you can ask) but the dealer you used for warranty work is fishing for business and thinks your service is due already as they don't know what the car is set for.

Yes. At that milage I'd service every two years.

Interesting, why do a yearly service when covering such low milage if the option of a two year one exists?

Our Yeti 1.2 did 4k miles per year and we were advised to go two yearly variable servicing.

Just my 2p worth, but that low mileage in a year indicates to me lots of short trips, not good news for any sort of oil. Not getting hot/condensation/acids/stuff not boiling off etc

Long distances, hot oil and things can go further.

I'm of the old school and like regular filter and oil changes, especially from new, despite new production line assembly tolerances, superior oils etc.

Does you service indicator on the maxidot tally with the service book, or is it indicating service is due soon?. I agee that with low milage, and lots of short journeys its best to service annually.

The variable service system will detect your engine condition and adjust when the next service is due... :happy:

Absolutely right - but despite this cosy picture, in the real world, it is still an ordinary old reciprocating engine. Things wear, debris is collected in the oil, and despite any "sensor" there are build up of contaminants that modern oils can cope with up to a point.

Modern engines are not some sort of computer generated ideal, but a very much improved version of the old c**p we had years ago. Treating maintenance on modern vehicles is not like any old "white goods" stuff, they still need TLC.

As said in a previous post, an oil and filter change early on can only help longevity - if you're sufficiently carering. We intend to keep out Yeti for 10 years, so my "old fashioned" ideas might just prove worthwhile. Our old Rover 25 tdi performed faultlessly for 10 years with oil and filter changes twice a year - nothing else went wrong :whew:

Apologies for hijacking the thread somewhat, but is there an easy way to tell which service regime the car is set to?

According to my maxidot my 1.2 tsi is due its first service at the end of January.The car is 12 months old at the end of November and I think I will get it serviced then.

Have a look on the inside page of your service book at the sticker with all the codes printed on,code QG1=variable service,code QG2= fixed service.

Mine reads QG1 which is variable and the maxidot display is predicting Jan/Feb for its 1' service but as I have said I think because of the low milage on the car and frequent stop/start town driving I will get the service done late Nov' ie at 12 months old.
