Car in Limp Home Mode - Glow plugs flashing

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Worrying problem, I just nipped to the shops and started the car as per normal, waiting for the glow plugs light to go out before starting - as I have done a million times before. Car was fine for the first mile of the journey, but then out of nowhere the glow plug light started flashing.

I pulled over, turned the engine off and started it again, waiting for the lights to all extinguish. All as per normal. Once I started driving off though, within 500m same again, glow plug light flashing and my car putting me in limp home mode - ie accelerated 2-3 times slower and just acted very sluggish.

Now, all the garages are closed and I am tempted to call the RAC out to see what their VAgcomm says but I am hoping for suggestions here.

I had a fiddle with the EGR valve yesterday, took off 3 nuts, removed the lower exhaust pipe and stuck my finger inside to check movement of the valve & see how badly cruded up it was. I stopped short of removing & cleaning the whole thing due to unable to get access to another bolt (see my other thread below). Seeing as this is the first time I have driven it since I did this 'work' I worry they may be connected

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Cheers guys :(

edit; The DPF was removed by Shark Performance 18 months ago and remapped out. My Engine Warning light has been on for the last few weeks due to the EGR valve being blocked.

Could unplugging one of the sensors & plugging it back in again with the battery connected cause the car to ''forget'' the map and look for DPF sensors - when none are detected it treats it as a DPF failure? DPF/Exhaust sys light is not on though.

Excuse double post, mobile wont let me edit my OP.

Doh, my own stupid fault! The lower exhaust pipe which clips on wasn't secured, this caused the engine to throw a wobbly!

RAC man clipped it back up, cleaned out the throttle body and diagnosed the EGR as faulty due to the valve being loose. He has closed the EGR best he can and will let me know the cost to replace should I so desire.
