more power

Featured Replies

hi, i have a standard octy mk1 1.9 tdi, just wondering how to get more power out without spending a fortune. have been toying with the idea of fitting a sport intercooler and induction kit, would this work?

also, put a new bearing and cv (cv snapped!! anyone ever heard of such a thing happening?) in yesterday (well proud, did it all myself) but now she's pulling over to the left(same side as new bearing) everything is fitted correctly and all bolts tightened fully. could my undoing the track rod have knocked it out of alignment?

Won't do a damned thing unless you remap it. The intercooler upgrade would be a vast waste of time though, IMO, unless you are going for serious modifications elsewhere.

Get the tracking checked. As already stated uprating the intercooler is pointless unless you remap. My advice is get it remapped & that will give you a lot more power & torque.

cheers, would getting a remap cost a lot (including fuel consumption)? and would it involve me actually doing anything? have heard something about ecu super chips, is that a more expensive version of a remap? other than a remap, is there any other inexpensive, easy ways to gain more power? air flow maybe?

Remaps cost anything from £150 to £400. TDI tuning box's are an alternative but not the cheap ones that just fool the ECU into thinking the car is cold. I run a Van Aaken Smartbox on my A4 which sits between the ECU & the Common Fuel Rail injectors. There are very different opinions on remap versus tuning box. but I'm very happy with the VASB it produces loads more power/torque & gives better fuel consumption if driven normally.

What power is your octavia making now? As in which engine is it? Makes a big difference, Some are very tuneable easily. Remapping should not make the car more thirsty, if anything a good custom remap should make it better if driven easily. Agree with above, 'upgrade' intercooler is a waste of money really, all it is likely to do is create more turbo lag as it creates a larger parcel of air that has to be pressurised by the turbo before entering the inlet manifold. On standard turbo, injectors etc you probably have no problem with intake temperatures anyway.

Talk to Shark on here, Or contact AMD, Awsome GTI are close to you being in manchester.

I am more advised towards a remap as it a reprogram of the ECU to give the power increase... with the PD lump you have you will see improved MPG too!

What is the current power output of the engine?

90bhp, 100bhp, 110bhp, 115bhp??

Shark does a nice tuening box which even has a Fault code reader built in, this is always handy to have.

its the clasic model so i assume its the 90 even though when i put my reg in on some ecu site, cant remember which, it tells me its 110. im leaning more towards the remap now, would rather be spending 150 than 4oo though, or would the more expensive ones be better? some places are saying they can increase bhp by over 50% is that possible? and cheers for the feedback peeps, much appreciated

Your engine ignites fuel mixed with oxygen. In order to give it power power it needs more of both. Air alone will do nothing. You need to remap. And if economy is that important to you, then I suspect you should forget about wanting more power. You still won't need to do anything to the intercooler to increase the power, but mapping is the only way you are going to achieve it, in reality.

As for increasing bhp by up to 50%, yeah, good luck with that. I suspect the most you'll see is 20hp increase. And not likely that much if you do have a 90hp engine.

tbh when it comes to something like a remap then make sure you get it done right, at the end of the day they are reprogramming your ecu, i have heard of some horror stories of cheep places bricking the car costing the owner an new ECU.

As a little example Shark offer the PD 100Bhp Stage 1 remap which takes it upto about 130Bhp (engine dependant) £299 incl VAT.

fuel economy isnt too important, as long as its not ridiculous like doubling the consumption. just beenchecking out the box things, do they really work? they are talking about a 30 hp gain on a 90 hp engine. are they just a fancy version of those resistor looking things that trick the engine?

If you're running a 90, don't even think about doing anything until you change the injectors for better ones. Waste of time. 110 nozzles from an ASV are good, and if you can find them .216 nozzles from a T4 are even better.

Once you do that, you can adjust the IQ using VCDS to get them running well, which will instantly bring your power up from 90 to at least 110 if not more if you play around with it.

If you need any help in this respect, Lofty would be your man - he's swapped them out. I'm in the process of going one step further so i'd probably not be the man to ask ;)

If you're even more tempted to play... Google the 'hammer mod' for a ghetto method of increasing the IQ even more if you are running a 90.

If you're already in a 110 then it's either remap or tuning box. Some crazy people choose to run both side-by-side but i'd not recommend it if you want reliability. More fuel = more compression = more boost generated, which in any situation can result in all sorts of ruination.

If you're wanting cheap bang per buck, tdi tuning boxes are very cheap for the resulting increase - they work, but are pretty crude. But people have been running the mod that tdi tuning boxes are based upon (google the Evry mod) for years without seriously adverse side effects as long as you exercise some caution and restraint with how low you drop the resistance to.

I do rather like ALH engines purely because people have done so much with them so tinkering is lots of fun.

would a 90 hp be able to do 125? thats the fastest ive ever had her at (racing a copper on the m60!! he was in a ford galaxy that had a seat badge on)

If you intend to remap go with a reputable company Awesome, Revo, Shark, Emaps etc.

My friend putted a 1.9TDI 131 HP engine into an Golf2 and tuned it up to 270 HP ,measured on dyno

But investment is huge...

Not a prayer, without doing other stuff.

The cheap box's are indeed a fancy version of the resistor mod.

The much more expensive digital box's usually intercept the communication between the ECU, the injector rail & in some the MAF sensor too.

wouldnt mind stretching to around 2ton, would that get a decent one?
