Columbus faults - any advice?

Featured Replies

My Superb Elegance is coming up to two years old now. The std Columbus unit has, over the past couple of months, been showing signs that all was not well with it. It had started taking a long time to start up with the message 'system starting' appearing on the screen and 1 or 2 minutes would often elapse before I could use it. Once up and running it was alright so I've lived with this up to now. Then, last week, it started to refuse to play any DVDs including several which I know have played fine on it before. Now this is a real nuisance as I use the DVD player to keep the kids entertained when waiting for the school bell etc.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with a Columbus? Complex devices that these are I'm wondering if anyone knows of a quick fix or indeed anything straight forward I can try before the inevitable dealer visit gets booked? Presumably, the unit should be covered under Skodas 3 year warranty? I hope so as if it's deemed to require replacement I don't fancy a four figure bill.

hi your Columbus is showing the exact problems that i had with mine that was two years old. it took me 3 visits to the dealer and a video off the unit starting up and several phone calls to skoda UK to have mine replaced. and then the new columbus they fitted unit stopped working within two days and i had to have another Columbus fitted.good luck with yours let me no if i can help.

Dealer should sort it, but just noticed your sig and see you have an r400, that must be insane. Really miss my SV, had it for two years and even with the 140 k-series it was mental! The only car i really regret selling but hopefully when the kids are older i will treat myself to a CSR! Good luck with your problem.

Thanks for that Bill. I'll note this reply for when I speak to the dealer in due course. Strangely enough, when I started the car an hour ago the unit came on straight away and the DVD player has decided to work again. I'm not niaive enough to imagine that it's fixed itself for good but I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days as I really can't spare the time to visit the dealer at the moment unless I have to.

Thanks, yes an R400 with RTB upgrade so 225 bhp approx in a car weighing a little over half a tonne. Insane is one way of describing it!

best of luck 2slo, at least when you have it replaced like me you will have the latest unit and all the software just out of curiosity does the left hand button on you steering wheel work the Columbus as well as the phone.

Thanks Bill. I didn't know the unit had been changed since mine was built. The only update I've heard about is the TV upgrade option. Mine has the 7 digit postcode capability. What else is new?

The left hand button works the phone and changes tracks on the HDD/ CD etc, I don't think it does anything else. I can do it without looking when I'm sitting in the car but trying to remember it now without looking at it...

its the small round button you press for the phone when mine was changed that button now works the same as the button you push on the Columbus for voice control i don't have to press that button on the Columbus now i just use the button on the steering wheel for voice control off everything .

Ah yes, sorry, I forgot about that. Yes, I can do that, I often tell the computer to 'dial number' or 'dial name' success rate with voice recognition seems to be speed dependant: when static it almost always gets the instruction right, at motorway speeds it's lucky if it gets one in three commands right.
