Tell me about the 1.6MPI engine?

Featured Replies

Is it really as bad as I think?

I'm looking for an Octavia Estate and have been discounting all the 1.6 MPI engined ones because I've inferred from posts here it's a bad engine. Low output, high CO2, generally nasty.

I'm looking for a car I can run into the ground over 10 years, so I've only been looking for the more "modern" 1.4/1.8TSIs, however for my limited budget and high requirements (<=£10k, Petrol, Manual, Estate, Facelift) discounting the MPI really limits by choice.

Am I foolish for discounting it, or should I just stick with my gut?

A test drive is the answer!

Yes, a test drive is necessary. I had one and came to the conclusion it was the dullest vehicle I had ever driven. Awful and not even economical.

You're right that I should do a test drive.

But what are they like long term compared to the TSI engine (reliability etc)?

Afraid, long term won't come into it. The car is so dull, you would not want to keep it.

(they are cheap mind you)

Cheers for all the replies. Never got round to a test driving a 1.6 MPI. Only got so far as a 1.8 TSI Elegance and bought it :)

Congratulations on seeing sense and going for one of (if not THE) best motors ever to grace the engine bay of an Octavia. Prepare yourself for a silky smooooooooth quiet engine that will have you grinning like a lunatic when you press your right foot and smiling with smug satisfaction when you fill it up and realise that it can easily give 40+ mpg on a long trip and mid-high 30's around town.

Enjoy your 1.8TSi - I certainly enjoy mine

Had an Octavia hatchback with the 1,6 mpi engine for 4 years. Love it, nippy and strong for the weight of it. It's an 07, so well old, but the era before over complicated electronics etc. In fairness it had low milage when i bought it, well looked after, apart from the rear brakes bushs etc. Probably the reason for the sale. Sorted that out fairly cheaply. Going to keep it going for a couple more years before i can borrow enough to get an estate with the same engine.
