P0420 & P0171 HTP 1.2 Fabia petrol

Featured Replies

After only needing a rad/fan sensor and new discs & pads apart from service items, my son's 115,000 mile petrol HTP Fabia 1 is showing the above codes. Please can someone direct me to a thread covering this subject, I assume the words 'EGR valve' will appear in the text!

If the EGR valve needs cleaning, is there a You Tube video showing how to? What spray cleans it? Brake cleaner or specific 'carb cleaner'?

Thanks in anticipation.

Cleaned my egr and throttle body on my 1.2 htp, was nice and easy job. I uses a small screwdriver to scrape the thick off and used part cleaned and old rags to get it shiny again.

Once unplugged you will nees vag-com or similar for the throttle body and egr values to be set.

I have a Gendan fault code reader, will it be able to re-set throttle body and EGR values? What needs to be done? Is it because to clean the EGR you have to disconnect some wiring plugs?

All a bit hazy to me......

+1 - I thought all you did was take them off - clean them - put them back on :p

EGR valve on the 1.2 is very different to diesel ones, and much, much less likely to be clogged up to an extent that it can't do its job. The 1.2 EGRs do have their troubles, but for overheating reasons, not blockage. So do have a look at it, especially the core plug on the bottom of it, in case there is damage there.

The 1.2 EGR is all electric, including position feedback, so in most cases, if it were causing trouble the ECU would generate a code specific to EGR function because it would be able to see that it wasn't doing what it was told.

Looking briefly at the two codes you do have, via rwbaldwin's helpfully posted links, there's no mention of EGR valve in either.

Don't know if the Gendan code reader you have can do adaptations, but I doubt it. You can clean the throttle body without unplugging it, if you are careful not to strain the wiring loom. If it's never been done, chances are you'll find a fair amount of crud on the underside of the butterfly.

Sorry I can't offer much help in finding the real problem, but try to work through the suggestions in the Ross-Tech pages.
