Could this happen to the VW lump as well

Featured Replies

do yourself a favor and keep off the 1.6 diesel engine they eat turbo after turbo as the engine is underpowered and relies heavily on the turbo. go on any Peugeot/Citroen forum and type in 1.6 and read the horror story's. in fact ford has just brought a field update regarding the 1.6 diesel focus saying that if the turbo goes the only way to fix it properly is to replace the whole engine.

Just been reading this could the 1.6 tdi VW have the same problem???

No. And its nothing to do with the turbo struggling due to the small capacity block it's attached too. The 1.6tdci/hdi unit have a fundamental weakness regarding the oil feed pipe that gets slugged up. There plenty of info on it on the net. Main symptom is carbon build up around the number three injector. Changing oil more regularly than the manufacturer states and using decent fuel helps avoid the issue. No such issue exists with the vag unit.

i agree with that they are bad news, the early vw 1.6 suffered with egr faults but the later have bigger motors and s/w update cures it.

The 1.6 is a new edition to our fleet, most have covered around 35k in 2 years although I have one that's almost 30k that was new in January. So far so good but the tdci was terrible and they often fell apart around 65k.

I tink not, got 37 k on in just over 2 years, going like a clock, oil changed every 18,600 miles (30,000kilometers?)

Relax.

PS

The 1.6 TDI is NOT underpowered, for most drivers in most conditions on most roads, observing very basic common sense procedures in respect of driving styles.

It, the 1.6, is an excellent replacment for the venerable 1.9TDI lump imho (fingers crossed)

cheers

lol it was just the rest of your car that didn't work Marcus :p Is it all sorted now?

Not at all surprised to hear of Ford diesels expiring early.

Peugeot/Citreon the opposite applies.

Tsk Tsk Fubar

Der car worked, just not properly, issue is still ongoing despite my list of new bits AND a specific(I have been told) software upgrade.

It is definately something to do with the transmission "talking" to the throttle pentiometer, thus causing the engine revs NOT to rise with the throttle depression.

Nick her into neutral whilst holding on the handbrake, to keep throttle foot absolutly stationary, (after rollback has occured) and engine revs jump to 2250 or 2500 rpm.

But while Drive or Reverse are selected the throttle input is "ignored" and the revs held back, I can only presume to protect the clutch pack.

Still with 5 years warrenty and 5 years free servicing + "cashback" to MOT another vehicle , I am happy enough for now.

Cheers

Marcus

The Ford unit in question is a PSA Peugeot/Citroen engine.

Wasn't the VAG 1.9 TDi engine based to some extent on the old VAG 1.6 TD from the 1980's, in any case??

Funny how things come full circle...

Funny enough I thought exactly the same.

Austin Harbinson came back from America in about 1984 1985 ish, he was driving a diesel Golf, if I recall correctly, it would have been hired? which in hindsight sounds strange unless VW put them onto the hire market to let punters try before they bought?. Had he bought a diesel Golf=Rabbit in Nth America?

I remember my father being interested in the installation.

Then I nearly bought a VW Passat in the late 80's with the puny wee 1.6 TD, I bought the BX instead because it was significently cheaper, and I thought VW were pushing their luck with a 1.6 diesel in such a large car.

How times change.

PS

I reckoned the 2012 model Fabia with the basic 1.2 petrol was underpowered, I drove one recently and took it odd after trying a 1.2 TSI in another installation, no torque in the non TSI engine

Yeah after its been through Ford's grubby mitts :wonder:

Well, Sniff!

Ford actually made a BETTER job of the 1.9TDI than VW did.

in respect of the Shalaxy family.

Cos Mr Ford was savvy enough to NOT :wonder: use the timing belt to drive the water pump.

Now warnt that a good idea.:whew:

funny that

petrol engine = ford

diesel engine = vag

......they're French. :|

I'll second that, my 206 is currently forsale as spares or repair

Just recently found out that the turbos blades on the 1.6 TDCI/HDI are made of plastic.

My 1.6tdi now rated with 143hp, same values on engines above is considered risky, very risky.

Talking about turbos, the 1.5DCI engine are very famous for blowing turbos.

Here´s a pic of my first fuel tank after engine remapped, 950km and 135km on reserve.

This pic is from a couple weeks ago, now has 57k

Sniff, always sounds/looks better in kms

Anyway I have seen 700 odd miles to next fuel, immediately after filling.

700*8/5=5600/5=1120km

And confirmed this afternoon /evening.

Put £50.00 in her at sainsburys, coleraine, did not particularly brim the tank, drove to Lmavady over the mountain, parked up for 4 hours , then came home back over the mountain.

With 30 miles (conservatively) behind me, reading 695 to fuel when we got home.

So thats a prospective 725 miles

Yep, which in turn has it's roots in the 1.5/1.6 petrol...EA827 IIRC.
