DVD Won't Work - Code 19

Featured Replies

Just tried to install some software onto my computer and while the DVD drive will open, spin and close the computer does not appear to be recognising it. Checked on Device Manager and I get the following message:

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code19).

I have tried s a shutdown and restart (no difference) and unistall (boots back up with same problem. Tried the driver update but it is up to date according to windows.

Did a google search for this and there is a few instances of people saying to run regedit then delete some files, however I am wary of doing this.

Anyone got any advice??

Not really advice, but I've seen this happen with certain combinations of DVD burning software; do you have anything aftermarket on there (i.e. Nero, Roxio, etc)? They install a thing called "filter drivers" which can cause problems like this. If you do have such software then try uninstalling it temporarily and it might help. If you had it on in the past then that can also cause issues if the drivers get left behind.

Trouble is, I haven't personally had this for several years, so I forget how I've actually fixed it...hopefully Google can point you to some valid information though if you have an idea of what the problem is!

Got the problem sorted now. Apparently a commonish problem over the past few years, reasonable amount about it on the web but wasn't too happy to do any file editing. Spoke to an IT guy at work and then went into 'regedit' and deleted a couple of files, rebott and all sorted.
