relay clicking under dash on start!

Featured Replies

My car clicks when the needle on the rev counter pass 2500rpm, on both increasing and descreasing rpms. It only happens when cold for the first minute or two. A few other ppl have reported their diesels doing it, but we seem to be in the minority.

Mine always started well, but sometimes is a bit smokey , I don't have any coolant vanishing issues.

Changing my coolant sender had no affect on the relay clicking. I find my mpgs vary between 50 and 60 for the same drive, so there must be something not right. Normally when the car feels more sluggish I seem to have the lower mpg

Mine does this..... seem more noticeable now that the outside temps have dropped a bit. I seem to have days when when it feels a bit more sluggish too - I have always blamed that on my slight sticky turbo.

It's the glow plug relay is it not?

Glow plugs come on for start up. They then come back on after start for up to 8 mins to help with diesel knock, but they will cut out at increased engine rpm as they aren't required.

+1

When the glowplug light goes out, it just means that the glowplug preheat period has expired - not that the glowplugs have switched off.

so what i can make of that reply is the glow plug relay is naff ? its never done this before an my dads doesnt do it, also just as an ofchance had my temp sensor changed an it doeant give me a reading of above 70'c unless i boot the car then it will get up to around 80 but soon drop back to 70 it done this before the temp sensor was changed an thats why i changed it thinking it was that , any suggestions would be greatfull ?

Temp issue - does it ever get to 90? could be a stuck rad stat instead.

The glowplug relay is interesting, as some TDI users never report this happening in their cars. I have changed my CTS, the relay clicking happened before and after.

Make sure the relay holder isn't loose in the relay plate as this does make a difference.

A faulty alternator regulator can make this more noticeable - more voltage means louder click. Measure the battery voltage at idle and at 2500 rpm.

It's one of those noises that once noticed, some people can't help but listen for it.

On mine, I can here it if I listen for it, but otherwise I don't notice it.

The relay can be moved to the engine bay. I've done it once for a woman who said it made her jump. Until her husband pointed out the noise she never heard it, so it was his fault :)
