Do I need the barrel & key too?

Featured Replies

Is the car key coded to the ECU/dashpod in the Fabia?

Fairly urgent response needed please. ;) Is changing the ignition barrel needed? What/where is the "transponder"?

The transponder is in the black part of the key.

The ECU can be reprogrammed to accept a new transponder code as this is what has to be done when the ECU is changed.

Soooo, if I have the key (with transponder), the matched up ECU & dashpod, it'll work then? Do the physical ignition barrels though have a "shape" specific to a key, i.e like a yale lock? (i.e would new key fit into my current ignition barrel, with it matched up to new dashpod & ECU?) Thats the general idea.

Been told how much "the works" would be....

Surely all the keys have a different cut, so you'd only be able to use the same barrel if the key was identical to the one you had?

Yes , and to code new keys to the immobiliser requires a code from Skoda plus proof of who you are and the vehicle documents.

This could be interesting when the car's a "bitsa".

Well, I'll have effectively carried over the immobiliser from the donor car (in the dashpod isn't it?), but it answers my question. I will need to swap barrels, to enable new key to work, which will already be coded to the ECU/dashpod, it was working with before. :)

Hoping a barrel swap is an easy job. Was hoping internal works would be kept to a minimum.... (i.e unplug 1 dashpod, insert other one. :D)

If you have the ECU, dash insert and key from the donor vehicle then you should be ok.

haven't you already done this before with the original Fabia and the replacement ECU or did I imagine cutting my arm to shreads trying to help you with the CC at the handling day last year???

That was the same ECU part number, but this time I'm having the NEW key as well, which will mean new barrel too. But essentially, yes you're right. Have the scar's healed yet. ;)

I've thought of one side benefit though. My car is still wired for Kruise Kontrol, although its never worked since its installation.... Methinks given it usually worked on the vRS Fabia's it might suddenly start working once the conversion is up & running. ;)

In which case, K (if you're watching) I owe you some dosh, mate! :D

Why not keep your old key and change the ECU immobilizer (what you did before). Also the CC will depend on the age of the ECU. The newer ones are a pain in the bottom, whereas the pre 2004 are simple.

Jason, I must ahve missed something. What are you upto??

Not much buddy. ;)

I did cruise control on a 2005MY pd100 Fabia during the week, no problems encountered.

It point blank refused to work on mine - despite all K's best efforts. I have a permanent fault log on the ECU - something that mentions cruise, so is most odd. So, in short is the general techie consenus that I can save myself a LOT of time changing ignition barrels, and it would easier to use VAG com to reprogram the car to my CURRENT key/ignition coding? If so, can I borrow someone with VAG com please?

(and I guess bgeing in possession of current four digit code, and new car's four digit code off back of dashpod is sufficient info needed to complete the job?)
