Locking Wheel nut removal / help

Featured Replies

Really struggling with this now, I have two locking wheel bolts I can't remove, VW type with spinning collars so the halfords type tool will not work. I know the Dynomec tool removes 109% of locking nuts but they are £145, Dynomec offer a service but are based in Yorkshire, does anyone know of a garage in Glasgow or surrounding that does this?

Thanks in advance.

Try a local tyre shop, I once had a problem with a Saab, a local independent tyre shop removed all four for a reasonable £20

I tried a few local tyre shops and all wanted to cut or weld to get them off which I didn't want to do.

I wouldn't be too keen either.

I've got a set that use a key like this, which today chewed up the inside of the bolt I was removing. I have some bolt extractors but I don't know if the locking bolts are hardened which would stop me being able to drill the extractor into the bolt. As soon as I can get it out, I'll replace with something a little better.

Looking at Dynomec's site, they have a link to a removal service via RAC. I'm a member so I may give them a buzz tomorrow.

I got my key from here, not sure if your key is the top type

Yes that the same type, I managed to pick up a matched one from fleebay the other day for £12, not that it helped.

I had the same thing on my Superb, once I got them off I bought a set of the older splined ‘ABC’ type (middle set in the link above) as they offer a much better purchase area.

(I also swapped them on the TT for the earlier ones fitted to our Golf)

Which was a complete bloody waste of time as they weren't interested at all.

I emailed Dynomec but got no response.

I did however get both locking bolts off today.

I parked the car with the wheel about 1ft from a brick wall, using a trolley jack against the wall I jacked it out and against a small block of wood which was against the socket / locking key with torque bar attached, with the jack pushing against the socket it prevented any slipping out and off and I then eased off the bolt. Worked for both sides.

Ah I rang Dynomec who gave me some friendly advice on how to get the RAC to help. Whether it will work on not remains to be seen.

The inside of one of my ABC type locking nuts has been destroyed and I am not able to get anything to grip onto the inside of the bolt, so I'm going to have to get it off one way or another.

Next time hammer a slightly bigger socket on to it and do it that way, always worked for me!

I couldn't hammer a bigger socket on ( its a smaller one that you should hammer on), that doesn't work with this type as it has a spinning collar which is also difficult yo get off as its high tensile, getting it off would only reveal a round bolt head anyway so difficult to grip with a socket.

After ringing the RAC last week, I was unconvinced the patrol that was on the way actually knew what he was doing and had to call his control centre to confirm the kit he carried was Dynomec (I have no idea what he planned to use to remove the bolt). Needless to say I cancelled his visit, reinflated the tyre and left it for another day.

I found Hometyre who wanted £96 to remove the wheel bolts, whether it was one or four, and then found www.lockingwheelnut-removal.co.uk, just south of Birmingham, who used a Dynomec tool to remove the offending bolt for £20. Not an easy job unless you know what you're doing, did come out and I can see no evidence of damage to the wheel. All good and well recommended.

You have to get a chisel or screwdriver and separate the spinning collar then hammer the socket on after , I had to do my parents car it's only a 5min job on each wheel :)

skoda dealers generally have a full set of locking wheel nut keys so they dont have to hunt for the key in the car. if you take the car there they may be able to remove them for u

What a great post holmesie, as is often the case the answer to a problem is the simplest one.

hopefully they wont charge a fortune to remove them youll have to speak really nicely to the woman behind the counter lol

ive removed all sorts of locking wheel nuts in the past (used to buy auction cars) often without locking nuts! the only way to do it in my opinion, remove the spinning collar with chisel/pliers etc etc then get a socket slightly smaller, but MUST BE the type with loads of grooves on, not the 5 faced type!! works everytime.10 minute job...

New tricks, the spinning ring defeats the old hammer a socket on it trick. The tight fit in the wheel means you can't knock the ring off and lots of them are 2" deep in the wheel.
