She's slow to warm up!

Featured Replies

Once up to temp the needle stays straight up at 90 all day, it just seems to take a while to get there.

Left home this am at chilly 3C, no traffic so within half a mile of leaving home I was cruising at 60 mph, it took 6 miles for the temp to hit 90C, is this normal with the 1.6 CRD?

Pleased to say the heater was blowing warm after a couple of minutes

Diesels are very thermally efficient, unlike petrol engines so in cold weather take a very long time to warm up. On cold days last winter my Superb used to take at least 9 miles before the temperature got anywhere 90.

This topic seems to crop up every year once the weather gets colder.

My vrs diesel cr takes ages to warm up once the ambient temp goes below circa 5 centigrade. It is really my only moan regarding the car.

An annual moan. If the heater works well then that part of the cooling circuit is fine and the main thermostat is doing its job.

When I had a Mini, Maxi and Morris Marina I'd to fit a winter thermostat AND blank off the radiator grille in an attempt to get some heat and de-icing function.

Modern heating and ventilation is wonderful in comparison.

The other thing that will make it take a bit longer in this cold weather is the fact you have the heater on.

Went for a blast early this morning in my new vrs, took a good 10 miles before I gave up waiting and gave it some beans.

Did notice the dashboard temp gauge and Maxidot don't match up on the temp. The gauge says 90 way before the Maxidot, maxi was still in the 50's when the 'normal' gauge said 90. - any thoughts on which one is most likely to be correct?

Isn't the maxi dot oil temperature?

Stares at floor feeling silly. Yep Maxidot is oil temp, and the main gauge must be engine temp.

Doh. Doh. Doh. Numptie.

Cheers anyway! No more wondering why the two don't match!

main gauge is coolant temp, maxidot is engine oil temp (the more important one)

Cheers!

The very fact you mention that warm air was reaching the cabin within minutes would suggest that most of the heat being generated by the engine was entering the cabin, hence the time taken for the coolant to reach operating temperature.

I often run my diesel without the climate control on for a few miles allowing the engine to warm up quicker then turn it on for instant heat.

Over the last few days my 1.9 has taken about 12 miles to hit 90 degrees. All that cold air being forced through the radiator at 60 probably has something to do with that ;) ;)

In theory the radiator shouldn't be open until the engine is up to temperature as the flow of coolant is controlled by the thermostat.

The quicker I drive the faster the temperature rises.

I keep hearing this maxidot and oil temp display, will it work on my 57 plate vrs?
