How to tackle the dirtiest car ever (thick green sludge)!

Featured Replies

I have an old car that someone's coming to view on Sunday. They are fully aware of it's green and rusty condition, but I want to have a crack at getting as clean as I can for the guy, so he can see how bad the rust is.

It's a 1991 Suzuki Samurai LWB if anyone's interested. So we're talking a cream fibreglass hardtop with white paintwork (rust around arches and sills).

Now it's been parked behind a bank of trees for a couple of years, so it's totally covered in wildlife. Moss, leaves, green slimy stuff (lichen) etc.

I have a full compliment of cleaning gear thanks to this forum, so I'm hoping to hit it with the pressure washer first. I have a few brushes too, but just wondering if there is any specific detergent out there that will break down the plant growth?

I'm hoping to produce the best before and after comparison photos of all time! So any help would be great.

There's little value in polishing and waxing at the moment, this is purely to get down to the paint. I'm considering Jif or bleach/toilet cleaner. But I'd rather not poison the local wildlife and damage all the rubber/plastic components.

Cheers guys

You will find that if you use your pressure washer, providing the car can cope with being sprayed at various angles against window rubbers, etc, most of the dirst will come loose.

Heat will also be your friend so if you can cover key areas of dirt with hot soapy water this will loosen it more and make it easier.

Any sort of 'All Purpose Cleaner' twinned with a small 'Detailer Brush' will help you to get rid of the nasty grime...........:)

Great stuff, thanks Baker!

I'll post the before and after shots, so you can score me on effort!

Muc off caravan cleaner and a car brush would be perfect, coupled with your jetwash.

I would love to see a coating of snowfoam strip the cak off

Muc Off caravan cleaner is excellent for green slime removal, and isn't too aggressive

Just to back up what Baker says..Pressure wash followed by a wash with hot soapy water and a liberal spray of APC will bring it up pretty well

BTW .......Sainsbury's APC @20p for 500ml is just the same product...but pink
