Using an iPod on the MDI - problems

Featured Replies

I've used a Sony mp3 player via usb cable on my MDI and was able to flick from album to album using the controls on the steering wheel. Recently I've been using an iPod Classic, it plays fine via the iPod MDI cable but I can't flick albums at all (and yes, I've switched the iPod to "repeat off" before cabling it up). It just plays all the tracks on the album, but won't move to any other album. OK, I can access other album tracks by using the browse function on the MDI, but that starts at A and works through eventually to Z, not exactly convenient when driving!

Is it just an Apple design fault, or am I missing something?

The sound system in the Fabia is amazing, by the way!

Same here, this is how it works, from head unit, browse etc. Wait till you get a HDD connected lol.

I think a nice double din touch screen HU may be on my Christmas list, depending on how happy I am with the sound from the Swing system.

Even a cheap-ish Pioneer and standard speakers in my Mk1 VRS I think are great, and I'm fussy about music quality! Shame about door card rattles though.

How old is the iPod Classic?

I seem to recall that early ones wouldn't work properly with the MDI. It may have been an issue specifically relating to the larger capacity ones IIRC.

OK, Let's qualify this. You can flick between anything, depending what directory level you are at. If in Albums then you flick through albums, in Songs you flick through all songs on your device, Artist ... you catch the drift here :) And this is chosen from the head unit. I think there is something you can do using Maxidot, will try on my way home.

No, it doesn't work as I described, you have to use the head unit to browse between categories. I tried moving between albums using wheel buttons but didn't work. Maxidot still to be tested.

I don't know about you but my iPhone4 gets the car's BT confused wen connected via cable. It tries to use the phone as a Blurooth media player which blocks MIDI interface operation. Song shows as being played, time counts and there is nothing coming out of the speakers... Anyone had that?

Having had MDI on a couple of MK6 Golfs I can confirm that it is only possible to track skip and scan from the steering wheel and the scale of what you can skip between depends on how you've browsed to your tunes.

One thing I do very much like about the Fabia is that if you press and hold the volume dial for a few seconds it powers off the HU, turns it on too, find it handy and you can't do that in a VW!
