Hazard relay/indicator random clicking issue

Featured Replies

While nursing this slightly poorly mk1 2003 octavia 1.9tdi back to health, I have to resolve an issue with the indacotrs (possibly) when in use they work fine as does the hazards however, when driving or stationary with ignition on and the indicators (not being used) the things clicks quite fast and very randomly. Some journeys does it very little & other times it'd drive you mad. Sounds similar to when a bulb has gone and the indicator clicks clickly to alert you to a fault.

Have replaced hazard relay switch thinking it was a tired relay but that hasnt cured it. later will investigate the fault properly. Anyone had same issue & can point me in the right direction?

grateful as always

Common problem. Spray some switch/contact cleaner into the indicator stalk and give it a good wiggle around.

Mine did this last winter - the hazard/indicator relay behind the hazard switch on the dash seems to go crazy, but no actual lights flash (when it is going crazy, they still work normally).

cheers,

I gave it a good spray & didn't make any difference so just removed the stalk multiswitch, gave it thorough cleaning & refitted but made no diff... so i guess it's root around ebay for a replacement

Maybe the wiring loom around the steering column is damaged.... although that would not be a common fault.

nb: when changing the stalk you have to mark off how many times you have removed the steering wheel for some reason (sure someone else can say why). if you are looking at changing the stalk maybe you should consider a new stalk and get a CC one..... upgrade time!

i had it it the top right wire if your looking at it pluged in was broken now its ok now rejoined think it was geen and brown

Took the indicator stalk off today & gave it a thorough inspection. Physically looked in v.good condition but after a throrough clean anyway still wouldn't work properly so found a used replacment on ebay only 2 miles away from me that was cheap & happy days it's all working well now... no annoying mad clicking

Good result, but beware this is quite a common issue, so depending on the age of the one you picked up from ebay you might be changing it again sometime.
