Fabia front hub nut

Featured Replies

Sorry not to introduce myself but urgent advice needed for my 1.4 auto 2001 Fabia!

In the past I have done all my own repairs but increasing disability means I have had some work done by a normally reliable local independent garage. The latest was to replace the dreaded ARB plus the wheel bearing & CV joint on offside necessitating replacing hub/CV nut with the later design on both sides.

On the way home today I noticed a faint intermittent squeal from the offside, the garage was closed by then for the weekend. So when I got home removed the wheel trims I could see that the hub nuts on both sides are not fully home showing a few threads on each side and not a few shaft threads as normal, the odd thing is they are not loose and I could not tighten them any further using a long breaker bar.

This obviously not safe but for the life of me I cannot think what has happened. There is an excellent photo in a post showing the latest nut done up how it should be http://www.briskoda....ub-nut-removal/

Update

Posted the question about the drive shaft nut on Yahoo answers and got a reply in 20 minutes (Shame on you Briskoda members) A guy Neil B had a look at his 05 Fabia with same shaft nuts and found the same both sides i.e nut threads showing. At least I know that's ok, unfortunately I think the new wheel bearing is either faulty or the garage damaged it when fitting as the car rumbles like I have fitted 18" ultra low profiles!

That's normal and the front hub nut torque is very low, over tightening them will break the nut. It's something like 50nm and 45 degrees.

Has the splash plate been bent, is it slightly touching the brake disc ?

Many thanks for the replies.

Please see my modified original post as I have added a photo of the passenger side nut and hub on original CV shaft. This is the one that scares me, there is about 50% of the nut threads not used!!! If anyone has the later hub nut on their Fabia I would be so grateful if they could have a look to see how theirs compares.

mogwye I checked the splash plate today it didn't seem to be touching but I gave it a good push away from the disc, odd thing is the main noise has gone but that side does seem to be have a bit rumble at low speed.

Checked Skoda workshop manual are correct Tech1e about the torque + quarter turn, don't worry I didn't jump up and down on the bar when checking it.
