Front Hub Nut Removal

Featured Replies

2005 Fabia VRS

Need to remove part of front hub assembly to renew split outside CV gaiter.

My 36m/m (12 point) socket fits but is slack and twists around on nut, because of it's thick walls of socket !!

Also smaller size nut on rear wheels, with same shape. ( I think is a 32mm)

Skoda Mechanic uses - - - -

BLUE POINT LTS 4357 THIN WALLED DEEP SOCKET SET (3)

Made by 'Snap-On' company. (Now out of stock)emoticon-0149-no.gif

This set contains 30 - 32 - 36mm sockets.

The 36mm socket ref is LTS 4367

Laser 4146 identical socket set does the job.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hmm - my manual doesn't say what size it is, but i think it could be a 34mm, 32mm is for the oil filter top from memory.

What I can tell you is the official tightening torque is 50Nm + 45 degrees

34m/m won't go anywhere near it, 36m/m fits but slips around under pressure.

Have ordered a 3/4" drive 35m/m socket from E.Bay with adapter to bring it back to 1/2" drive.

The 36m/m bi-hexagon socket I have, slips around as flutes are not deep enough to sit fully into nut flutes.

Hopefully if 35m/m doesn't quite fit on, I'll be able to chip away by grinding bits off till it fits sort-of ?? (fingers crossed)

Have seen old Fabia (not a VRS) which had a proper 6 sided nut fitted to it's front hub, (as it had lost it's front wheel trim.)

Going to try Skoda parts tomorow (Monday) see if I can get a new nut, and query the old Fabia type nut thread size, and perhaps replace??

Will ask for possible available correct wheel Hub socket, wish me luck. .........

we use a 36mm at work, not perfect fit but gets them off. then we just replace with a new nut :)

Need to remove front hub assembly to renew split CV gaiters.

I didn't think you needed to remove the hub assembly, just unbolt the driveshaft inboard at the gearbox flange and drive out the splined end through the hub?

Wheel hub nut is a M16 x 1.5m/m (thread pitch.) 36mm x12points

Seen SKODA parts fellow, who says their mechanics use a 'BLUE POINT' ( LTS 4357 ) Thin Walled impact socket set of (3).

The actual 36mm socket number was LTS 4367 coded.

I have in the past removed rear hub metal protective cap to reveal a smaller 32mm hub nut with same format/shape as front hub nut.

Believe it or not, mobile Snap-on fella says out-of -stock as recently ran a promotion on LTS 4357, and no idea/when will be back in stock.????

Receiving 'LASER 4146' Thin walled sockets from E.Bay soon, looks a dead copy of 'Blue Point' socket set.

Just tried the 36mm socket from the (Laser 4146) set, fits perfect, at last able to do job myself.

yea its not best fit in the world but does the job, never had prob wen tightening back up. but i agree u be best finding better fitting one :)

u dont need to remove the whole hub either

its easy to change the cv boot. remove the 3 13mm bolts from the wishbone that holds the balljoint,

remove the hub nut,

knock out cv joint from the hub

cut old boot off.

then we have air tool to fit the new boot.

or u cud get urself the cheap plastic cones to slide boot on.

or knock the cv joint from the shaft and fit that way

best of luck :)

Thanks everyone for your appreciated informative help.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

You do know you can get kits that once you've cut off the old boot, slide over the shaft then you superglue together. They normally come with grease as well. You don't have to dismantle anything.

I think that while the superglue will work well if everything is clean, the straps holding the boot to the CV joint will dissapoint you - buy VAG and do this job once.

Im trying to remove the entire hub assembly - and i cant seem to remove the hub from the driveshaft and everything is undone - does the wheel bearing unscrew at all? i thought it just slid out because its held into a splined surface? I tried the clamps to remove it but ive completely snapped the clamp in two !! :(

Don't hit the end of the driveshaft were the nut screws on I made that mistake this weekend it equals new cv joint use a copper or rubber mallet, it shouldn't be massively difficult to get off was there a washer behind the nut sometimes they are a pain if they go to an angle it's like the nut is still on .

by nut im assuming you mean the 19mm allen key one? thats what ive removed from the front and i can see the driveshaft now it just wont budge
