New vRS DSG manual downshift clunk

Featured Replies

I own a new vRS for 3 weeks. I have had the 2-3k RPM rattle noise in my 2.0 TSI which I got rid of last week by attaching a dampening clamp.

Having +1700km on the odometer I started using the paddle shifters to play a bit with the engine and transmission. After having manual gearboxes in the past, I really enjoy the 6-speed DSG. I miss the manual a bit but not enough to regret buying the DSG. I hope at least...

Here is my concern. When I manually downshift gear with the stick or paddles (5 to 4, 4 to 3, etc) e.g. when approaching the traffic lights this is what happens: first the car seems to accelerate a bit for a fraction of a second, then I hear a short strange noise similar to clapping (clunk), then the revs increase and the engine starts to brake as expected. I've asked this question on VWWatercooled and someone suggested that blipping is the cause of this. All this is really not longer than a second in total and happens only if I downshift with the gas pedal released completely. When I downshift with acceleration (when overtaking someone), there is no sound and the gear change seems quicker. Also, when I just let go of the gas pedal before the traffic lights and the car gradually slows down, the transmission downshifts without any noise and very smoothly.

After having the rattling noise I might be a bit supersensitive to noises coming from my new car. But anyway, I thought I might ask if this clunk noise and general behavior that I described is normal - especially DSG owners.

Thanks!

The clunk doesn't sound normal to me, you will get the engine being revved up by the car during the downchange as the electronics blip the gas pedal to smooth out the change. I wonder if you are being supersensitive and hearing the higher pitched clack of the gears being changed in the box ready for the next shift?

I was thinking that I might be supersensitive too but passengers hear that as well... assuming they are not supersensitive, something is making this sound.

I don't hear the clacks you mention when the gearbox runs in D mode, so I guess it's not it.

Apart from the specific situation I describe, the box is super quiet.

If you hear "clunk" while shifting from P to R , R to N , N to D or D to S , thats an issue . Still to be on safer side , VCDS is suggested .

No noises during the shifts you mention. Just manual downshift with no gas. I don't know if clunk is the right word. Maybe it's more like a knock/strike with a "puff" that is audible just when the lower gear engages.

No clunking noises that I remember (will check tonight) but I have found the car lurched going from 3 - 2. doesn't do this in any other gear change and quite honestly I either don't notice it anymore or the gearbox has 'learned' my driving style and adapted.

Nemtex, thank you for your input and thanks in advance for checking this!

Ok i tried the shifting with no gas , i hear a minor "puff" but that with all the shifts . Guess its the friction that you get from moving the lever .

Chelios, thanks for looking into this. Do you have the 6 or 7-speed DSG?
