Odd whining noise - Help!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

as some of you are aware, I'm fairly mechanically minded, but I, and my mechanic friend are stumped, so looking to you for some help.

I drove 200 odd miles Thurs / Fri last week with no issues (other than a bulb blowing). I then drove to a friends later in the evening. Almost immediately, I noticed an odd occasional whining noise - almost like a belt slipping, but ever so slightly metallic.

Now, it was only when turning, and under load, so I nursed got it home gently. I got up on Saturday, and phoned my mechanic, he suggested a good way to test to see if it is the belt was to spray some wd40 onto the belt. I did this, then took it to him (short drive away). It got worst, so was fairly sure it was this.

En route I established that it makes the noise between about 1800 & 2400 rpm, and it does it in neutral with clutch in & out also. No noticeable change to performance.

Got to him, and he suggested I whip the belt off to diagnose. I did, and the noise was still apparent, so that eliminates the belt, tensioner, alternator, water & steering pump.

His colleague thought possible air leak, or EGR issue, but to me, it doesn't sound like either of those. As it is simple to do, I removed the EGR vacuum tube & plugged it (so EGR doesn't open). Noise still there. I'll check the boost hoses at the weekend.

It is at this point I had a damn good look on the interwebs, but to no success. Fortunately, I don't need to use my car for work / etc, so it is now parked up ready for me to try to fix.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Whining when turning sounds like power steering to me, checked your level?

Disconnected the aux belt, still there, and does it when stationary too.

I will check it though.
