Suddenly E-Mail Unavailable on Blackberry Curve

Featured Replies

For the first time in a long while tried to get an wi-fi E-mail connection to my Hotmail account (The free one) through the messages folder of my Curve PAYG using wi-fi on home router. This worked fine before.

However, this time it told me that I needed to set-up an e-mail account. So I went to the set-up folder, clicked on set-up E-mail account and it came back with the error message "Cannot connect yo the server". Repeating the processes, during the evening, didn't do any good.

I have been using the E-Mail today through both a PC and Playbook (Through the same wi-fi capable router at Home) and had no problems. Strangely, I was able to access my hotmail account over the same w-ifi link through the Curve's web browser. But it wouldn't oblige using the messages folder.

Anyway, I progressed to deleting both the wi-fi and GPRS service books, taking the battery out, re-booting and hitting the set-up E-mail key. Still no E-mail connection through the messages folder of the curve.

Spent the best part of 40 minutes in a chat session with the Mobile provider and eventually he gave up and referred to one of their outlets.

In desperation, I topped up the phone, thinking that a low balance might be blocking connection or part of a connectyion over GPRS or perhaps 3G (The account documentation says that as long as you have 60p of credit you should get a GPRS connection). Again, no luck.

This is so frustrating. I can get to the account using the phones web browser, but not using the designated connection supporting the messages folder.

Anybody have a scoobies whats occuring.

Personally, I don't think its the mobile service provider. I'd put my money on RIM or Microsoft.

it depends on a lot. I assume you have a BIS account with your provider.

what settings are you using when you setup your email? for exchange connectivity to Hotmail/outlook you need m.hotmail.com for the server name, I THINK you need to login with your full email address.

you've tried copying the settings from your playbook and/or PC. doesn't seem like a data issue as you have internet access via the device. looks to be a configuration issue.

Sorted ?

Without any other prompting I've just received a message from Blackberry on the E-mail service (Timed 0708) advising that the E-mail server service has just been activated for my Hotmail account for the Curve and to expect E-mails to arrive in 20 minutes. Weird.

I presume that this has resulted automatically from all my previous failed attempts yesterday to log-on to the server - I see this morning that I have numerous service registration confirmation e-mails from BB.

I also notice that a new mail icon bearing my Hotmail account details has re-appeared on the desktop - all be it greyed out at the moment. I think I've been missing that icon for some time now, although I do remember it being on the phone when I set it up last year. Trouble is, I haven't used the phone since February so didn't notice the missing icon and i suspect that an upgrade screwed it.

Postscript

Over 45 minutes has elapsed now since the BB activation message. The new mail icon is still greyed-out. No mail received over wi-fi, so I switched on the GPRS/3G about 10 minutes ago. Still nothing received. Now what ?

Postrcript2

Just got another E-Mail from BB (Timed @ 07:50) now saying that I need to validate my Hotmail account password. Talk about slow and tortuous. Lets hope this is the last step - wait another 20 minutes ?

Haalejuah brother !

First e-mail arrives @08:43.

Have to keep a weather eye on that circa the next software upgrade.

Postscript

E-mail over wi-fi now works - I switched off GPRS/3G and sent myself an E-mail from my mobile service providers account.

at a guess id say a problem with RIM. the service activation and email accounts are generally performed by your service provider via the RIM servers in Canada(or wherever they are now)

glad its all sorted!

.....where they keep a copy of your mail for you, even once you've deleted it. Nice people really, honest guv'nor. :|

I was always worried about that. any idea if they do that even with a BES? or is it only BIS customers?

Everything that goes through a BlackBerry (except Bluetooth and direct connection), goes through RIM, encrypted, and is stored there. This was causing problems in the Middle East not so long a go as the security services were unable to snoop on their citizens who were using BB's.

Don't tell Nick though, as it'll become the cornerstone of every conspiracy theory from hereon. ;) ;)

. . . in the absence of more reliable information from party headquarters :giggle:

Was aware of RIMs data retention activities.

For the wider audience, what prompted this was that I got a scam E-mail reference bank accounts (You know the sort, "Account violation", "Please reply within 48 hours using the button below, otherwise your account will be closed") and had, hastily and incorrectly, deleted it from the Outlook on the main PC and therefore was trying to retrieve a copy from the BB so that I could inform the anti-phishing unit of my bankers only to discover that the service was down on my phone. Curses !

Amongst other things that alerted me to the bogus e-mail was the source address [email protected]. Which turns out to be this guy;-

Lucky I remembered.

Doesn't usually stop you :p

Are you with BT? It could be a BT server issue not recognising the HTTP IMAP LAN based wi-fi Push configuration protocolismanisation. Give BT a call, I know how you like talking to them ;) :p

(of course, that's just my take on it and clearly know nothing about which I speak) :D

Thank you for that new perspective.

As you can imagine, talking to BT is way down on my "Preparatory for Xmas " to do list.

I don't want another 40 minute session explaining what joined-up writing is.

I do not know whether its always like this, but the phone system seems to be date stamping incoming e-mails only when the phone is switched-on. So that, for instance, when I took it out of standby this evening it downloaded a whole load of mails I had received today but they were all time stamped at the time of the download, not when they were received by the server. Leaving the phone on, further e-mails were received and stamped in real time. Is this correct operation of the system. Surely the mail should be dated at the time it hit the mobile providers mail server ?
