IPOD problem with albums on MDI

I cannot switch from one album to another on my ipod classic via MDI. I've switched the ipod to "repeat off" setting before connecting it to the MDI. Switching tracks within an album is fine, using the steering wheel controls, but it is impossible to fast forward or rewind to other albums (unlike on my Sony mp3 players with a different connector which plugs into the MDI with a slightly different connector) I have to resort to "browse" on the radio fascia to access other tracks, but that's not a good idea when driving!

Can anyone suggest a solution?
