Boost leak testing

Featured Replies

I have a boost leak somewhere and want to make a pressure testing system.

Does anyone know the diameter of the piping that going into the turbo as well as the diameter for the airbox end?

I know a system that works without fail...

Washing up liquid, water, and a spray bottle.

Spray a joint with the solution - take it for a quick spin. Visually inspect. No bubbles? Onto the next joint.

Rinse and repeat till you find bubbles ;)

Wont the bubbles just fall off? haha

Or just find someone local with a smoke machine ;-)

Could you get enough pressure with a smoke machine? Would it leak out even if a very small leak?

Not a stage smoke machine - A smoke tester.

lol, maplin sells glitterballs too:>

Yes lol a proper smoke tester I got one and is amazing

Can vary smoke levels and use as just a pressure tester :-)

Anyone any ideas on the diameters?

dog food tin fits into the TIP rather nice, you do need to clean well first though :D fit a tyre valve in the bottom and connect to pump and off you go

I made a few pikey boost leak testers but they are very handy so made one like this

Its a 70mm hose joiner attached to a 70-50mm silcone hose and a 50mm PVC end cap in the end. Also added a 0-30 PSI gauge for a more accurate reading/leak detection.

nice! ain't nothing pikey about that!

Cheers mate, made a few pikey ones before this lol thought id make a decent one as i use it quite often. Total cost is about £20 so well worth it. A proper compressor is defo needed, the little tyre pumps just dont work.

job well done by the look of it! wouldnt mind one of those myself!

Thats what we will be making, just needed the diameter of the pipe lol

The diameter of the turbo inlet pipe is 70mm or 2 3/4". You will also need to block off the crankcase breather system by removing the puck valve(round black valve next to dv) and bung with something, you can buy proper blanking plugs fairly cheap cant remember size. If you dont do this you will pressurise the crankcase and will have lots of blue smoke :-( pressurise to 10-15psi and listen for leaks, good luck mate :-)

Seriously you should sell those, I'd but one from you straight away haha

Hang on, just noticed you are from Barrow! I'm from Sedbergh near Kendal. Any chance of borrowing it?

You can pop through if you like? Can do test at mine? PM me mate

thinking I might need to do mine again when the weather improves. vac is always at or below 25 now where it used to go to 30 on the overrun and sit at 26-27 at idle. Dog food tin and tyre pump time :D
