Anyone got any of these suspension set ups on a VRS

Featured Replies

Now that the VRS is staying :) for the time being anyway, i cant stop thinking about a few things i would like to do, funds permitting!

I keep reading various posts about suspension. From what i can tell at the mo is its either H&R springs and Koni's or Coilovers!

Now funds will definatly not stretch to Koni's and H&R's, so a few questions if people could add any comments would be great!

1. Is just H&R springs without new shocks a definate no no, or can it work? (Car is on 64k)

2. What is the ride of Weitec GT's really like compared to standard?

3. Anyone ever used the below kits? What are they like? Anything else available?

I really cant believe that there is not more out there for the VRS to be honest.

Sorry if its been covered millions of times on here would just be good to get it all in one thread :)

  • I have KW v'3 on mine. I would say hold off until you can afford some they are awesome.

  • I have H&R springs on standard front struts and rear shocks (I'm getting to old for rock hard road car suspension!), measured the car before and after and they lowered it 20mm (03 plate VRS), ride

  • Pic of my octy lowered on V3's

for the cost of the kw i'd go same as me and get h and r spring set and koni sports shocks its really nice to drive and not harsh

The only thing putting me off the Koni's and H&R's is the fact that i would prefer abit more of a drop, and the cost! The KW kit if a reasonable ride would be a great option at the price.

I would go for coilovers if the ride is right, im not going to be dropping it on its arse or changing it every 5 mins!

I got H&R monotubes on mine were roughly over the 800 pound mark and I can honestly say they are worth every penny as the ride is amazing speak to someone at venom motorsport but have the box still and it has a euro car parts number

if money allowed then i would go for the kw3 or h&r coilies, but i just cant warrent spending that much. I know it is worth doing it right, i wont do it if it will make the car worse.

Im expecting a harsher ride but improved handling not the opposite!

The Weitec Hicon GT setup on mine has been on over 2 years now, and never regretted it, the ride handling balance is just about superb for me. Dropped about 30mm.

the h and r springs are a great spring i just got the poly mounts from psi to try too :o we'll see how that goes, most the springs listed and kits list 35mm but thats on the stock tdi ride height not the pre lowered 15mm vra

I have H&R springs on standard front struts and rear shocks (I'm getting to old for rock hard road car suspension!), measured the car before and after and they lowered it 20mm (03 plate VRS), rides as comfortable as standard when driving normal but push on and it all tightens up (they're progressive rate so the harder you corner the firmer they become), plus I happened to be in the right place at the right time and got them for £60 s/h but only covered 3k!

I should know better but as they seem to be dropping in price quite quickly now (I've had mine since it was 18 months old), I've started some mild mods, already got a Forge stage 1 map and TIP, full Jetex system (single box with a near standard tail pipe) and sports cat, panel filter with a better cai, and now I've just ordered a set of 18" Revolution Millenium II's to go on after the winter (not to unlike RS4 wheels).

I should know better (I'm 50 in January!), but I've been tuning cars since I was a kid and old habits die hard!!

Now that's got me thinking, maybe as a b/day present to myself I could get the Forge FMIC and go stage 2, mmmmm.

Back on topic, as a cheap initial mod go with a set of H&R springs (you'll always sell them on afterwards)

Th monotubes feel better than standard when driving normally not harsh in the slightest but do improve the handling when take it for a proper drive I think lowering springs just don't feel right and plus find yourself wishing you had gone down the coilover route

THE H AND R AS AS CLOSE TO STOCK COMFORT AS ANY COILOVER SPRING SET I'VE EVER HAD :)

love em but matched with the koni's there ace and better than the koni coilovers on my old golf in my opinion

I had kw v1's on mine!

Absolutely class. Would never look passed kw

I found the kw's to crashy was not a nice ride

How low did you run them?

wasn't on my car so unsure was on a mates motor wasn't stupidly low they were v2's but at guess would say 60mm was lowered

thats too low really, you will have been sitting on the bump stops..

like i say not my car so cant be 100% on levels my H&R's are sitting level with the tires and rides spot on and will be going lower soon

V2's have adj rebound dont they?

So somethings a miss there. Too low is pointless on any coilover setup. Also depends if he remove front black bump stops on the kw and fitted shorter rear ones really

yes they do, yes there is no way they are bad, i have owned a set myself, reason they would be crashy is as they are too low (as you say not a food idea) and the fact i suspect the bumpstops were not replaced/reduced...a common mistak!

When i installed my v1's which i did run around 50mm down. I removed both black bumpstops kw supply on the front. And fitted new bumpstops on the rear which i chopped around 2" off!

And the car handled tremendously :)

Super comfortable on a journey and as every set of kw's ive had very stock like. But with zero roll and no lift under acceleration. Awesome bit of kit imo :)

Butchvrs - what is the bouncyness like on h&rs with standard shocks? As standard suspension can get abit bouncy and rocking on acceleration and braking.

Any pics of H&Rs fitted side on pics for reference?

I really want to go coilovers as i know i wont regret it, other than ride wise!

As stated earlier I have KW V3's on my octy. They are superb.

On the wife's Fabia we have H+R lowered springs on standard shocks. It now looks fantastic but is very crashy !!! Probably due to the fact that the standard shocks are now working out of the range they were designed for.

KW V3's will soon be on the fabia.
