correct service interval and oil grade for Fabia II, to be pinned

Featured Replies

Well, OP got it a bit wrong and we felt obliged to help, what's wrong with that?

I will be on a blower to my dealer to ask to switch my car to fixed and stay on the better oil.

Strange,my service indicator is already set for 1 year/10k and our cars were built at the same time...

I'm still confused about this "better" oil.Does 504 just have a long life additive or other enhancements as well?

If just the former, then no advantage in using it if you've gone to a 1 year/10k service regime.

If it's improved over 502 on other respects, fair enough,it's certainly a lot pricier than 502!!!

double post

JerryT would be the best person to answer those questions.

What I know is that 504 test are more stringent that 502 tests. 504 oil offers protection for longer than 502. As how and why I do not know.

Perhaps due to additives or completely different base oils used or the synthetic molecules developed for 5034 oils are so much better than he old tech 502.

Hence why 504 is dearer than 502 :).

I think 504 is the latest petrol engine oil standard.

My point was that this was billed as a definitive answer to be pinned and has in fact become another "what oil should I use / well I use this oil / this oil is best you should all be using it" thread.

I have no problem with the OP or the thread. Just saying is all. ;)

No worries :)^^

Right OK then, think its fair to say after all these posts that it wasn't so cut and dry after all. Apologies if this has added confusion to the topic.

Its probably fair to say then that most Fabia 2's built up to some point in 2012 are on and should be on fixed servicing. Going by the handbook any car on fixed 1 year 10k servicing should be running 502 spec 5w/40 oil. Any cars on variable 2 year/20k servicing (if you've chosen at some point to go variable or cars come from factory with it) you should be using 504 5w/30 spec oil.

So - 1 year 10k fixed - 5w/40

2 year 20k variable/long life servicing - 5w/30 and that's going by skoda recommendations.

^^ Yes :)

Funny thing is the 5W40 oil would be better in terms of addressing oil usage :D.

I would like to go for fixed but still use 5W30 504 oils

My 2011 vRS came setup from the factory with fixed 12mnth/10k servicing and is stamped in the service book with the corresponding QG2 fixed service stamp code.

Handbook says a vRS on fixed service should use vw 502 oil and a vRS on variable servicing should use vw 504 oil. Doesn't mention anything about 5w30 or 5w40.

Having said that despite my car being on the fixed regime I have previously put 504 5w30 in it (so technically could be the 'wrong' one) although using this oil is a much better plan as it is a higher spec I believe. I don't have any excessive oil consumption issues.

My local dealer has confirmed that a vRS TSi on 1 year/10k servicing should be using 5w/40 grade oil, so the suggestion that the vRS should be run on 5w/30 regardless is wrong. I think this ought to be of benefit to may experiencing oil consumption issues as 5w/40 tends to be cheaper in any case (possible to buy Quantum 1 litre tubs for about 6 quid, way cheaper than the 18 I paid for a castrol edge 5w/30 1 litre)

Please provide a product link to VW 504 00 5W40 oil and will happily use it in my flexible service schedule 2012 Fabia vRS. The car was factory filled with Castrol 5W30 VW504 00 spec as per manual. As far as I know there isn't VW504 5W40 oil available.

VW 502 5w40 - lower spec and cheap oil. Therefore OK/recommended by Skoda as you say to use on a vRS with fixed (i.e likely shorter) service intervals.

VW 504 5w30 - higher spec superior quality oil and therefore more expensive. Required by Skoda for use on a vRS with Variable (i.e possibly longer) service intervals.

VW 504 5w30 is a much better oil and less viscous at operating temps so should give better fuel economy etc.

You would not put the cheap and nasty 502 spec oil in a car on long/variable servicing as the car may go 2+ years without having any king of health check etc. This does not mean it is not absolutely fine to put the higher grade 504 5w30 in a vRS. No harm will be done to the engine from having this oil. There is no mechanical difference between vRS TSI engines on fixed or variable service plans are there?

My advice would be: Fixed service - 502 5w40 or 504 5w30. Variable service - 504 5w30 only.

This may not be the Skoda-party-line or gospel from the Handbook but who cares? You pays your money and makes your choice! I personally would only use the 504 5w30 but there you go.

Agreed

And this is why it gets confusing. My manual also says 502 for my vrs, but not the grade. So you go to halfords for example and look for oil that says VW 502. It turns out this can be 5w40 and 5w30 flavours. So I look in the little oil guide for your car book in the shop and it says 5w30 for the vrs. So this is what I bought. It's not VW 504 thought. It's 502 and 505. Just been to the garage now an looked. Wierd.

As long as it says 502 I'm happy as that matches the manual. It's castrol magnatec fully synth

502 if you are on fixed is fine. No issue putting 504 in tho. Would be like just like fretting about putting in super unleaded/vpower when you are used to reg unleaded in your car. Stick to the good stuff I say ;-)

Another thing to worry about :)

The oil ive got in the bag in the boot is castrol edge professional 5w30 this is from skoda. gthe sticker in the boot says "Q16" but the maxidot says 8200 miles to next service

How many miles Have You done so far?

Yours is on flexible do it doesn't matter how many miles maxidot shows

1300 miles. So i can still have it serviced once a year or 10,000 miles

Wow, you are trashing her then big time to have service indicator showing 9k :D

Just to update my main dealer only sell 5w30 top up packs, appears skoda only officially provide long life top up kits. Chances are that if you get an oil top up at the dealers it will be 5w30 long life oil that goes in it. Exactly what happened with ours the other day.

Asked dealer about it and this is standard practice, does the car no harm at all. I'd now say that it doesnt matter if you use 5w30 or 40 for topping up.

As long as they are both the same type (mixing synths and half-synths or plain mineral ones is a bad idea) and both have VW 5XX relevant approvals then no harm indeed :)

Mine is on q16 , the dealer made a big deal that it was a recent change (July 2012) but since my car has the free servicing deal it will be serviced every year anyway at least fro three years before returning to variable , this is exactly what we did with my Superb it has fixed (free) services at 10k, 20k 30k and at 40k changed to variable its due shortly at 58k

Simple question...has anyone changed from 5/30 oil to 5/40 oil and can then say that oil consumption has been reduced?

JarryT did

@Richf - did you have any problems changing your vRS from variable to fixed at the dealers as this will cost them more on 3 years servicing deal than having it on flexible regime?
