Ex-Paramedic Scout

Featured Replies

Hi

Been thinking of getting a diesel scout but the used prices are a joke. Anybody bought an ex-rapid response Scout or know any places that do? I scoured the web but couldn't find any. I was hoping I could get one much cheaper.

I looked at one fairly recently, it was quite tidy but the interior had taken a bit of a beating with holes in it for sockets etc.

Paramedic cars are well maintained but they are driven hard, very hard.

The one I was looking at wasn't all that much cheaper either.

Scouts are expensive, the only way you'll get a cheap one is to find an old farmers/vets one or one with 100K+ miles.

I can't believe I only paid £14K for our 1 year old one with 8,000 miles on it three years ago. That money would barely get you a 4 year old pre-facelift today!

This one ended recently on eBay without selling. One of the first Scouts (2007) with 125,000 miles on it and he was still hoping for just short of £7,000.

It's the wrong time for buying a Scout too, people are gearing up for winter and looking for cheap 4x4's which keeps prices high.

Paramedic response vehicles I would never consider. I see quite a few around here, and they're always driven briskly, fully laden with equipment.

They will have had a very hard life and for good reason - the idea is to get to an incident as quickly as possible.

I'm the marmite fan in our house. I don't think the plastic trim improves the rather drab appearance.

Our local paramedic spends most of the day parked up in town, with the occasional blast through our village with the obligatory B's+2's.

Its good to know where they are for when its my turn to go T--s up.

Petrol ones are around 25% cheaper but are as rare as rocking horse poo...

Ohhh nice, my ideal second car for carrying the dog!! :)

Great value that Octy Scout 1.8TSi - thought it was going to be a million miler for that money.

I'd humbly suggest that the start of winter is probably the worst time to consider buying a 4x4 of any description. Dealers know people look and if it snows they know they'll panic buy so prices go up a lot.

I'd hang off for 6 months if you can.

Indeed. Last year I went for a test drive of one Octy 4x4 and it started snowing during. Surprisingly there was no willingness from the dealer to move on the price or throw anything in :) I didn't buy it.

Personally, I would never buy an ex emergency services vehicle. Or a rental car or any other car that is a pool vehicle and likely to be driven harshly.

I'm a Paramedic on rapid response, though we have Focus estates and BMW X1s. I wouldn't buy an ex rrv. A lot of standing tick over won't do the dpf any favours and the response driving will take its toll on everything else. Our X1s have clicked about 40000 in 1yr.

That's before you get to any bodywork damage....

Good feedback.

X1? Blimey - good decision by someone do you think? Don't seem to have much additional ground clearance to justify the 'X' status and don't look all that roomy for kit either.

We wanted Scouts, but for some reason we got BMW. I prefer my Octavia, then again I prefer the focus over the X1

Say no more.... :)

I bought a second hand tdi scout recently, it was expensive however having contemplated the purchase for several years and kept a watchful eye out for a good deal, it just didn't happen. They're a bit pricey new, the delivery lead time is long & they don't sell in huge numbers....all of which means the second hand market is seller biased. I'm very impressed so far, feel a bit daft for not buying one earlier. As regards an ex paramedic vehicle, I'd by nervous as these vehicles unlike motorway police etc are likely to have had a high wear pattern of use.

Cheers. Probably nearer it's true value.

As a paramedic who drives the Rapid Response Vehicles, stay well clear

- yes it may have had one carfull owner but its the 30-40 uncareful drivers who have been driving it you have to worry about

- by the end of its working life (age not milage) it will be shagged, they are driven (safely i may add) in a manner not conducive with longevity.

- In todays cash strapped ambulance service, why would we get rid of our cars if they had any life in them?

My team took delivery of our new RRV 4 months ago, since then:

- 2 major services and 4 minor

- 4th set of tyres

- 3rd set brakes

- topping 17,000 miles on the clock

Is 17,000 miles correct? if so why has it had 6 services carried out over that mileage? 4 sets of tyres & 3 sets of brakes in 17,000 miles......really???

absolutely no idea, we give them the milage every week and they give us a call when it needs serviced

if you think of the weight these vehicles are carrying, usually not to far inside the maximum GLW of the vehicle spec, rapid response drives etc

sorry, approx 200 - 250 miles per 24 hr shift 7/7

had it for 3 months not 4 :rain:

Wow,thats a lot of use! :-) must say whenever is see one of these its always going like a bat out of hell on way to a emergency! They dont half shift!
