Fitting Scuff Plates - Template ?

Featured Replies

I have the cheaper all black ones for my hatchback and looking at the instructions (if you can call them that), it mentions about creating a template ...... has anybody done this and if so, exactly how do you know what distance from each end they go.

Oh and it also says not to fit them below 20 degress...... so its a wait until spring then !!!

What an excellent idea..... right then, the hairdryer can be used for something more worthwhile then !

I get the impression that the template is either something the dealers have, or a separate part that could be bought separately

I bought the black plastic one and fitted them by line of sight, helped by a few pieces of electricians' tape

When I ordered them from the local parts department I asked about the template and they said "don't bother, they cost a fortune anyway".

I cleaned the sills with isopropyl alcohol, warmed both the sill and the plastic plate with the hairdryer and aligned them by eye. After I stuck it down I heated it all again and kept pressing to make sure the adhesive had stuck and to let the plastic bend to fit any curves.

Top tip: peel just enough of the backing tape back and put a crease in it at 90 degrees so that you can offer the plate up and move it if needed without sticking the whole thing down. When you're happy with the placement press hard to stick the exposed adhesive and pull out the rest of the backing tape. It gives you chance to lift it off again without naffing up the adhesive.

My vRS has already got front ones, anyone know if you can just buy rear ones?

(I can only see sets of four.)

Fitted mine yonks ago, using a tape measure and pencil outline.

Found the best position on one side of car, measured it and matched it to the other. The fit is fine and they stuck really well.

They feel very flimsy when not fitted so take care not to tread hard on them and they will last well and stay put!
