replacing door mirror bits - help?

Featured Replies

Hi guys, had a little mishap today resulting in a broken passenger door mirror. :swear:

It's dark outside so I can't see too well, but the damage seems to be a broken mirror glass and cracked housing. The electrics (including the LED) all work OK but there is a chunk taken out of the housing (or shell, or cover or whatever it's called).

So a few questions:

Do Passat heated n/s mirror glasses fit the Superb?

Are Passat housings exactly the same as a Superb's?

Is it possible to get new housings in body colour, or must they always be painted?

Presumably it's possible to get both items separately, and not just as part of the whole mirror unit?

Any idea of costs?

Got to happen just before a long journey! Hopefully, the glass is readily available and an easy fit...?

cheers

Quite a few places doing mirror housing (back side) on the web / ebay... I've only seen them available "from stock" in matte black, gloss solid black and reflex silver; there are some aftermarket ones available chromed, you can get them ready to paint; and I've seen a couple of places do the housings painted to order for £40; like this one http://www.ebay.co.u...=item35be5f1be3 (I have no affiliation or experience of them, I just saw it the other week).

With the glass don't bother with Halfords as they only have stick on glass instead of glass with the proper backing plate etc; Lots of places on ebay again. I bought at dealer as was in a hurry - but beware it was £60 for the glass. On ebay they go for £10-15 for glass with backing plate.

£60 !!!!!

Just found one for a Passat at £23 incl postage at http://www.wingmirro...44_881_883.html

- but not sure it's the same item.

anyone know for sure?

When I did my drivers side I bought a Passat one from VW dealership as they were the only local with stock. Can't be certain about passenger's side.

Now it's morning and theres some light to see. I notice that although the mirror housing is cracked a bit, the chunk that's broken off is from the black section at the bottom of the housing where the LED puddle light sits - though the light is fine.

So, is that piece of plastic a separate part that can be replaced without taking the whole thing apart?

cheers

PS - where's the edit button gone?

I fitted one of these recently: http://www.ebay.co.u...ME:L:OU:IE:3160

Cheers, that'll do!

Got a price of £42 from a stealer - but the plastic trim theat holds the light is less than £5.

Now, anyone got tips on how to fit this piece of trim?
