Buying a Car from Northen Ireland

Featured Replies

Hi,

Seen a nice used car for sale on the internet at a reasonable price, the only thing is that the car in northen ireland an i live i wales.

I have been told that there would be a charge to pay if buying the car and then bringing back over to the UK? Is this true, if so, how much?

Nope, your only charge will be the ferry to get it over the water.

It's not classed as an import, and is just a normal sale.

Just remember to check for any tick tock noises

Where is it I could maybe have a look for you?

I bought mine from the mainland so its no different going the other way. It's nice having a nothern Irish plate in England as people won't have a clue about the car. I kept my English reg as its the opposite here :D

I was talking to someone yesterday who's son is making a very tidy car trader career out of purchasing cars from N.Ireland and bringing them over to the mainland apparently.

He apparently has garages almost queing up to buy them off him.

Are they really so much cheaper over there then?

Thanks for all the replies.

Phoned the owner today and he told me that he has just sold the car.

The car was located at County Antrim, and was a mk4 Golf GT Tdi

Thanks, anyways :)

Good grief! I can't believe some of you think of Northern Ireland as a foreign country, It's part of England. and some lovely people there.

LOL @ Part of England.

United Kingdom

ie England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.

or

Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

even.

'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland'.

But Northern Ireland Twinned with England is a new one.

Their own Law system, Benefits system, Tax System, MOT System, Vehicle Registration system etc etc

You serious? All dealers here buy from mainland as cars are cheaper there and bring them back. That's a new one to me hearing it the other way around :D generally English cars are considered to be better looked after with more motorways etc so owing to an easier life, generally...

Yes, and I'm one. Just one correction, NI is part of the United Kingdom, not England. Officialy its the United Kingdom of Great Britian (England, Wales and Scotland) and Northern Ireland.

Ah ha, you spotted my deliberate mistake :hi:

I wouldn't buy a car from ireland have you seen the state of the roads over there,

I sold my last volvo to a lad from ireland and he admitted he was worried about damaging wheels due to state of roads

In the North (Northern Ireland) the roads are maintained by the Roads Service (Central Government Department) usually by sub-contract. Their quality is as good as anything I've ever driven on, in Great Britian. I stand corrected if I'm wrong but I believe roads maintenance in the Irish Republic is the responsability of local Councils, some of which have more money to spend on their local road network than others. Therefore it's a bit unfair to tar every area with the same brush; is there a pun in there.
