Sat Nav Questions

Featured Replies

Morning,

new to Skoda land and also trying to understand the sat nov system and using ity sikply. Couple of quick questiosn please.

My old sat nav was full postcode. Much simpler I find that 4 and then trying to work out the exact location. How do you enter a location, like an office blaco, if it is not a Poi?

90% of the time I drive without sound on the sat nav. I know where i am going an use it mainly for time of arrival and traffic announcements. My old system allowed for nav annoucements to be turned on/off from the front screen. I can't seem to do that here and have to go into tone etc to change tthe announcement settings.

lastly (for now!) what is the difference between on/off/dynamic?

Cheers

The Columbus with updated firmware and maps supports full postcode entry. you enter the postcode in the town/pcd box in destination entry. If it does not accept a full postcode then something needs upgrading to support the function, could be either maps or firmware or both.

Ah, is there a simple guide here to upgrading?

Cheers

The issue is getting what you need to upgrade, the maps need to be purchased from a dealer. Depending on how long you have had the car you maybe able to get them to do it for free. Firmware is more complicated, because what you install depends on the version of the Columbus. Problem is they all look the same, but some have different insides. Another thing to keep in mind, if the firmware upgrade goes wrong your Columbus may well turn into a door stop. The process is shown here http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=23779.0 in an old thread, but you need to source the correct firmware.

Cheers,

How can you tell from the car what map level you are on and firmware level?

Cheers

If you've not got full post code then you'll be on a very old firmware, something like 1004 or even in the 900's. There is no way from the front end to tell unless you are on modified firmware.

To answer your other question on/off/dynamic, on and off should be obvious. Dynamic will mute the voice unless you go off route or the traffic changes in which case it will start talking to you again.

Hold in the Setup button for 5-10seconds until a new menu pops up and (if it is shown) select Version Info to see what firmware and map levels are installed. More details in other posts.

Tried that but all I got was a divert to a selection of either 'am or fm' in radio?

Been quoted £190 for new maps from Skoda. Gulp....

Either upgrading to newer firmware or finding someone to code your current set-up for you in VCDS will enable the "hidden" information screen.

No need to pay £190 for maps! The latest maps are available to anyone with an internet connection. Still won't solve your 4-digit post-code problem, though, unless you update your firmware.

Trouble is Ned, that is a bit naughty and will not be condoned on here as the maps are copyright material.

The firmware is available to download from a few sites, I got mine from the site which Mannyo refers to and got it to load onto my Columbus. A few backside pouting moments but got there in the end. I got the 276X firmware and with version 9 maps meant I now have 7 digit postcode search.

Doleawg, did you press and hold the setup button for at least 20 secs after you get the radio info screen? That is what you need to do and then press on the box marked version info. If it doesn't do so then you need to find someone with VCDS or, providing the unit is still as it left the factory, take it out and have a look at the stickers on it.

Hiya mate,

I did get there in the end. Like you I had a few very nervous moments but now got full 7 digit postcodes.

Glad you got there in the end, and now have the 7 digit postcodes.

Yes thanks, great to have the 7 digit postcodes but slightly surprised that the upgrade of the Columbus core software and the maps didn't seem to produce any other noticeable new options?

In mine you got an excluded roads option in the nav, the audio bar to show volume was in the middle of the screen but came up at the bottom when adjusting, the fader and balance control could be done from moving your finger around a pictogram on the screen rather than having to use the normal change the individual numbers and the clock appears on the Columbus screen if it is switched off when driving. Also you can have a bloke telling you where to go rather than the woman.

Please tell...how do you get the clock to appear on the screen when the unit is switched off? I'd love to achieve that.

I upgraded my unit to 2684 firmware and hey presto there it was.Not a picture of an analogue clock unfortunately, just a digital time. It will only be there when the ignition is on unfortunately. I was hoping it would be there all the time but it doesn't, probably to protect the battery.

It's an option in the menus on the Columbus. Try the Display menu, look for Time Display, tick it. :)

Thanks for that, Ray. Worked a treat.

I dont suppose you know of a way to make the numbers larger in the screen? It can be seen of course, but is rather small.

Many thanks.

Mike.

The size of the display is not adjustable, Mike, nor can you select an analogue version. You get what you get, but I prefer it to a blank display! :)

Me too. Thanks again, Ray.
  • 1 month later...

If I leave my `maps` unused (not turned on) for a while...maybe a couple of weeks, when I next turn it on it comes up with a map of the whole of Europe...with the cursor over Ireland! I have to continually turn the right hand knob clockwise until the scale comes down to where I can use it. My car is 7 months old. Does anyone know what's going on?

Many thanks.

Mike.
