Winter diesel vs summer diesel

Featured Replies

Been using shells fuel saver summer diesel with all the usual millers and two stroke oil chucked in for good measure and find I getting much better performance and 6mpg more than shells winter diesel. The summer diesel was purchased in September and stored in my jerry cans. Not noticed any problems using summer diesel in temps down to 3 degrees.

When does the anti waxing winter diesel become essential? -15 degrees lol?

Even though you get 6mpg better how much does the miller and two stroke cost?

£6 for 1 litre of two stroke and £72 for 5 litres of millers diesel additive. Use it in winter diesel and the summer diesel. Summer diesel kicks winter diesel in performance and economy full stop. Will see how far I can push the summer diesel in the coming months without any problems.

I would keep a few gallon of Winter Diesel just as a tester, & then run in it July.

(Quality fuel @ no extra cost. ? Is it not cheaper now than what you paid back in September?)

Money on it that it does not give any less MPG than your Summer Diesel available at the time..

Diesel is pretty hygrosopic and it is winter changes in night and day time temperatures that get the condensation/H20 in the Tank or Storage container & the Waxing happens.

IMO it is best to change and drain Inline Filters regularly when doing things the way you are.

Just trying to be a smart ass with this summer diesel and so far I'm getting away with it lol!

The summer derv has more derv and less anti wax in it.

I'd not push it too far below zero to be honest. I think it's something around -8 or so where it waxes and you're stuffed until it's all warmed up. That plus you can end up needing new fuel filters, which would more than negate the 6mpg.

Won't take car out in minus 8 degrees as the roads will be too salty lol but good advise. Have used it down to 3 degrees with great results. Roads were a bit salty at 3 degrees but I washed it straight after.

Just be carefull about storing for too long. Modern diesel can get a bacteria growing in them - think this is something to do with the sulphur content. I think max storage time is about 6 months.

At one time the tanks on grain driers would happily sit from one year to the next but now they have to be drained down at the end of harvest. Not a problem as its just used up in tractors

Bit of a luxury if you can manage to leave the car at home if its frosty!

Wrapped up and all cozy like!

Yes I've heard that bacteria can grow in diesel but I think I read millers diesel additive can stabilise the diesel and stop this evil bacteria growth but I could be wrong. I only have a few months worth of diesel btw.
