Clutching at Straws...

Featured Replies

Two weeks ago my clutch gave way with no pre-emptive signs of impending failure. Turns out there was a screw that was jammed in the springs between the pressure and friction plates...I was told the latter shattered from the inside. I took this opportunity to upgrade to the VR6-G60 combo, and I'm eternally thankful to Unit 18 for sourcing the parts so quickly.

My plan up till that point was to go for uprated parts as and when things fail on my 95k+ PD100. I was saving up for a remap, but that went to the new clutch and flywheel. Now I have a few questions about what to expect next:

  • When the turbo goes, will the car still be driveable, albeit like an MPI? If not, I need to account for towing charges too. Will there be any warning signs or will it just go in a flash?
  • Am I right in thinking PD150 turbo and PD130 injectors are the way forward? Or is the cost vs return of the injectors not worth it?
  • I think it's wiser to hold off the remap till I have the turbo upgrade then spend on a custom remap...would you agree?
  • I've read price quotes in the region of £300 for 2nd hand PD150 turbos....would a new one be drastically more expensive? I wouldn't know what to look out for when searching for used turbos to make sure it's in good nick so I felt going new would be a safer bet.
  • When the front brake calipers go, I plan on going for a set from the Octavia VRS...the uprated 312mm ones. I understand I'll have to change the carriers as well as the pads+discs of course. Once again, is the price difference between 2nd hand and new calipers+carriers huge?
  • Would around £1k cover the turbo/injector upgrade and remap?

I know there will be some who would advise I should just sell and go for a VRS instead, but I'm quite attached to the unassuming look of my pd100 and the cayenne orange paintjob (of course, not as unassuming with the TT Comps...but no one sees them when on the highway).

1, it's pot luck what happens when the turbo goes. Some start to make police siren noises, other like mine just stall and won't restart.

2, I think you'll be limited to 140ish bhp on your current injectors. So I guess it depends how much power your aiming for? I'd got 150 turbo either way for safety and reliability

3, yes, mapping should be after upgrades

4, roughly £600 new iirc

5, not sure, you can get refurbished ones from eBay, there are people on here who have got them from a specific seller and have been happy. you'll need new hubs too though on your pd100

6, I'm not sure how much injectors are, they are the pricey bits tbh. Have a word with Alistair see what he has about. Injectors/Used turbo & map should easily be under £1k though.

Thanks a lot for your time. I'm aiming for 180 as I've read other threads of PD100 owners who have achieved the same....although I'm not sure if they went down the Mongrel route or achieved it with simple engine/turbo upgrades.

When you say 140 with the pd150 turbo, is that including the remap...or will that add another 20-30 on top?

PD100 injectors will flow to roughly 160bhp on a PD150 turbo - thats when they start to peak out. PD130/PD150 ones will be needed after that. :)

Thank you :)

Does fitting the injectors involve removing the turbo? In which case, it would make sense to upgrade both at the same time...?

Add up the prices of the jobs you are taking about.

£300 for a turbo

xx for a remap

xx for new brake calipers / brakes

xx new hubs

£1000 ? for injectors

Then the insurance, surely it will be more than a VRS? Also it would be a bitch to sell a modified PD100.

I guess what I'm getting at is wouldn't a VRS be better.

I'm looking at around 300 for a remap and 200 fitted for uprated 312 brakes (calipers, carriers, hubs + consumables).

All things considered, with insurance, I do agree it might be more expensive than trading in for a VRS....but I'm really attached to this furby and plan on keeping it till it's ready for the scrapheap. Plus there's the added 'feel-good' factor of driving a hand picked modified vehicle than something off the ramp.

My logic may seem warped :$

Surely the best "safe" bang for buck is Brakes/suspension then remap? Things start to get really expensive if your looking at pd150 turbos & injectors then mapping to suit?

I was only putting the pd150 turbo plan in place for when the current turbo dies...like i did with the clutch.im trying to source an octavia vrs 312 brake set up (caliper, carrier, hub, pad, discs) for when my current pads and discs need replacing.i actually havent put much thought into suspension upgrades, apart from getting poly bushes all round...but previous owner did all the bushes two years ago. i probably should get it lowered to improve handling, but the jabba RARB already does wonders.I figured I'd leave the EGR delete for when I do the remap as I read it can throw an engine management light. I wasn't too sure on the whole decaf and mufflerectomy....i thought it was just to make it sound better, but I need to read up some more.Anything else I should look in to and read up on?
