Which engine?

Featured Replies

Hello :)

Im new to the forum! Buying my first Fabia on Wednesday!

Just wanted to know what engine is in this model: Skoda Fabia 1.4 COMFORT 5DR [AC] 2002

What BHP and is it 8v or 16v?

Many thanks :)

Michael.

could be either...........but 70% certain it will be the 1.4 16v 100bhp..........as very common in the mid range spec "comfort" model

Could be either.

Got any pictures or the number plate? If it's got rear disk brakes it'll be 100bhp 16v.

Many thanks for the quick reply!

Currently got an Almera Sport 1.8 with 110 BHP, looking forward to a change of car as never driven a Fabia before! Nearly bought a Felicia today though but had a really bad feeling when i went to look at it, so i just walked away!

AO02 UPS

I didn't think the MPI came in anything but classic trim? Could be wrong.

the MPI engine is rock solid - no timing belt, but can suffer from head gasket issues, and the oil cap can give "gunky" symptoms if not run for long periods of time warm.

I was born in Leicester and grew up in Kibworth. :) But afraid I saw the light and moved to the seaside.

Welcome, by the way!

Anyway, I make that a 1.4 8v with 68bhp. (Also referred to as an MPi)

Needs taxing though ;)

I do like the older Almera - nearly bought a GTi version once. I'd go for the Fabia over any Felica - a more modern/safer design of car.

Thanks for your help!

Any more good points / bad points about these engines?

Are they capable of doing 162,000 and still being strong?

Michael.

PS. Sorry for the questions.

askMID also says 'Skoda Fabia 8' which I took to be 8v, and the displacement on the DVLA site ties in with the MPi too. :)

Bad points - lumpy idle. Not sure of anything else about them though, other than they're based on the old 1.3 in the Felica and aren't a VW designed engine (which IME can only be a good thing!!)

Missus has an 8v, which I often drive. Not a bad car at all to be honest. You may well be disappointed in its performance, and its handling isn't very good either. It sits up like a scared dog, and with seriously thin wheels it doesn't corner well in the wet! But that can obviously be remedied. MPG is actually pretty poor compared to others in the same catagory as well. 30-35 mpg around town, and 40-45 tops on a run. Other than that, its pretty solid. As mentioned above, early ones can suffer with head gasket problems, so make sure you check oil/coolant contamination. Again mentioned, oil filler cap can give false worry if only used for short journeys and not run up to temp, or the stat is faulty. If its high milage, chances are its had HG done previously anyway. Only problem we've had was a dodgy thermostat as well which caused a bit of worry with creamy filler cap, but once changed and taken on a decent run, all was well. Under-rated cars imo, they won't really depreciate any more, and will last for a long time yet. Always around with very little milage, and insurance is the cheapest of any car we could find on the market! (The reason we got it, as the missus had 3 accidents in her first year driving!). Hope this helps mate. ;)

As i keep saying, thank you for the replies!

Anything i should look out for? Engine noises, rattles squeeks etc?

There is only 2 months MOT left this car and i've set me heart on buying her!

Michael.

Have a scout around the pinned Fabia thread, you'll get the idea of common Fabia problems. To be fair, most aren't hard or expensive to fix though. Wet car matts is a sign of leaking door seals (I think EVERY fabia suffers) but if you're handy with a sealant gun and a fish slice, this can be fixed.

-Check rear wiper squirts water (popped hose is common)

-Check AC if it has it works (if not it's probably a sensor)

-Check the lower fan speeds work (1,2 & 3) (if not it's a £12 eBay part and half hour to swap)

-Shake the front left/right wheels. If there's play and they don't stay rigid to the car, bushes need replacing (£20-£25 parts plus 2 hours labour)

-See if battery light (red) comes on the dash when you first half turn the ignition (if not, a wire has snapped below the gear box which is easy to fix but means the battery isn't charging until the car hits 2/2.K revs)
