A wee warning about the 1.4 diesel fabia

Featured Replies

Just been into Thomson and potter to pick up a sump plug, and got chatting. It turns out the fabia 1.4 diesel lump circa 2008 have a real issue with the oil pump drive chain snapping! And killing the engine. He said its really strange and its such a clean break with no clue as to how it happens, that's quite prevalent a problem too.

Now the worrying bit - on this fault, skoda are, and will deny all responsibility! Only in one case did they pay out 25% of repair costs, to a car with 10k on it. Just to make you aware to save any surprises.

I have a June 2009 1.4 TDi Fabia 2. I hope this is something they rectified and hope mine isn't affected.

I did have until recently an 08 but gone now :(

Yeah, I'd expect as much from Skoda and parent VW... How terribly nice of them!

Only had one do it, wouldn't say it was common.

No more so than any of our other engines.

I thought it was a belt and not chain on the oil pump drive. I am a bit worried because mine is a 2008 1,4 diesel.

itll have a timing belt but internally there is a chain that runs the oil pump. Please dont worry too much as tech1e said it may just be a problem like any other engine type, they all have problems, it seems this one is not that prevalent and it has been sensationalised by the sales guy.

I would say look after your oil, and use the right spec and you sould be fine. Just cos you have one doesnt mean itll go.

The one I worked on Skoda refused to help as it was five years old, had only two services and neither of them were main dealer.

Don't blame them tbh.

It happened on my year 2000 6n2 polo too, amf engine code, completely wrecked the engine, fortunately vw coughed for a new engine and gearbox under warranty.. It was caused by the balancer shaft siezing up on the motorway.. The engine block literally cracked in half...
