White/Grey smoke from exhaust on low revs

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I would like to hear your opinions on my problem. The car is 2008 1.8TSI Elegance O2 with 98.000 km on the clock.

On low revs (for example on standstill) and warmed up engine there's quite a lot of "rich odour" smoke coming from the exhaust. Engine uses a lot of oil (coolant level stays unchanged).

When driving there's no smoke, car pulls OK without any evidence of a problem, there's no error in car's computer. The first idea was water in fuel, after cleaning the system we have eliminated this cause. Compression test (and sensors) showed no leakage. The next two ideas are 1) turbine on it's way out and 2) leaking valve seals. I guess the turbine would be "smoking" on high revs, too. On the other hand it's a bit early for a turbine failure...

What do you think?

Of course I've got a service booked already, but they are alse searching for the error on the basis of "trial and error" method.

It could posb be piston ring/s leaking.

It could posb be piston ring/s leaking.

As said, compression tests were all OK, also engine sensors showed no decrease / error in pressure.

Thanks.

Oh ok. Sory didnt read fully only scaned through.

A Compression test establishes if the compression rings are OK. On older cars I've messed with each piston normally had 3 rings, 2 compression and 1 oil ring. If the pistons in your car have oil rings a compression test won't test them. what are the plugs like? are 1, 2 or all oiled up? that would suggest the car is burning oil. if it's just on 1 or 2 cyliders that would suggest problems with those cylinders alone. could also be valve guides as you say- does it blow blue smoke on start up (so oil has drained down past the guides when standing) it's not done high milage though.

daft question but I assume you've checked it's not leaking the oil rather than burning it. One final question how much oil is it using and are are you using the correct oil for the car, i.e. the correct VW number 502 00 etc, not just the viscocity 10/40 etc?

cheers

Ade, thanks for your answers.

I'm not a mechanic and I didn't do anything myself. My mechnic didn't mention any oily park plugs.

There's no blue smoke on start up, it smokes only on idle / very low revs and when warmed up.

No leaks were found outside the engine, I'm using the VAG "prescribed" oil (Shell Helix Ultra AV-L, don't know the viscosity right now, changed in my service garage).

Anyway, tomorrow it's off to the service garage and I will keep my fingers crossed for a reasonable repair costs...

Hi Slick,

I don't mess with cars anymore TBF as I just can't be bothered, so I hope it's not bad news for you. let us know what the outcome is once your mechanic has found out what the problem is. Hopefully it's something simple and inexpensive

cheers

Back from the garage.

They found quite a substantial amount of oil in the intercooler pipes, cleaned the whole mess, checked the oil for gasoline and water, all OK, checked the turbo, which is OK, too.

Smoke is gone at this moment, but I'm afraid it will return as nothing major has been done to remove the cause.

What could be the cause for oil in the intercooler?

Hi there,

well that's sort of good news! I seem to remember issues a bit like this elsewhere on the forum, so you might want to search the Octy II section to see what you can find. From memeory it could be the intercooler that's at fault, but I could be wrong.

best of luck

My fears have come true, after a month of non-smoking motoring the smoke from exhaust is back.

The final verdict is faulty turbine, which is slowly leaking oil into the intercooler pipe. Too soon, damn thing... :@ :$$$:

Get it sorted quick then; I've seen them go from "hardly noticable" to "James Bond smokescreen" in about 10 miles.

Not good news!!, time for an uprated turbo lol.
