My friend has a Y plate golf gti 1.8 20v t And his altenator has gone, I found one from a 2000 octy vrs.

Wi this one be compatible? Or were there multiple types?

there will be different ones but some may fit its all down to if fitted with ac or the rating

It will fit yes, but it may have a different wiring harness connector but it will still work..

I swapped one Valeo OEM from a '00 Octy 2.0 with a Hitachi from a Bora(engine unknown)...perfect fit
