Yes it can, any oil is better than no oil, but it's not a good idea to mix oil grades if you can avoid it, but unless you know what is in there to start with you can't help that much.

I tend to think of 10w/40 as being the O negative of oils if you get me?

^ Agreed, for a good while now I've been using the same in my Felly, albeit 15W/40.
