Drivers door Top hinge Play

Featured Replies

my drivers door has slowly crept down a couple of mm over the years and i opended it today and could lift the door up and down fractionally with the play being at the pin in the top hinge

Question is - Will replacing the pin with new solve this? or has the hinge worn away too? If it has could i fit a bigger pin to fill the gap??

Thanks in anticipation

Theoreticaly the pin will worn first, but you can't know for sure...I don't know if you can buy a spare one

Changing the entire hinge is the solution but is nasty, the wing must be removed too.

ill try the pin i think haha

Your hinge has worn allowing play in the pins.

You can't just replace the pin. You have to buy the whole hinge.

I did this and opted to get a specialist to fit it as you just can't get tools in there and the dam hinges are done up so tight with torx bolts.

I did paint hinge to match the car colour though as they come unpainted

right cool thanks, but if its worn, surely a bigger pin would sort it??????

Presumably the pins only come in one size, if you needed a bigger one then it's going to need to be hand crafted by gnomes in Sweden or something.

I would lathe one up until its a snug fit. Buffing it down fraction by fraction.

I don't think the pin come outwards but could be wrong the design is a pain to get to.

Aye it slides right on out, a wee tap from underneath. Prob not worth worrying too much about rigjt at this minute, it's not gonna drop off anyway. I'll have an investigate, then post my findings

I am facing hinges problem. Can I replace the top one alone to fix the problem? Also please let me know the part number of top hinge.

Thanks

Yep, WRT palival's post above - I had the same problem.

After a while, the driver's door on my VRs started to rattle and creak a bit over bumps - and when I investigated the problem, I opened the driver's door about 12 inches, and pulled up and down on the far end, to find a huge amount of play in the top hinge.

I bought a replacement hinge unit from a main dealer for not a lot of £££'s, and found it a pretty easy job to replace.

Once done, no more rattles and noises!

The only tiny issue, that doesn't bother me, is that the new hinge is bright silver now, and not body-coloured like the other hinges. But, as I said, is no problem really!

Yes you can replace top hinge part number is  1U0831402. drivers side and 1U0831401 pass side.

They look like they are a pig to do as you need to get to the rear bolts and door bolts, they can be dam tight as well and you need a good torx driver.

I had dealer do mine.

And yes it 100% cured my door movement

I will order the part and replace it. Thank you.
