random loud clacking noise at idle. goes away with revs

Featured Replies

pull the plastic engine cover off the top of the engine. mine did something similar and it was the rubber of the back of the plastic cover that had worn away

Check AUX belt?

It was running without that cover on when I took the video :-)

The video isn't very good (sorry). It sounds kind of like a solenoid engaging and disengaging something randomly perhaps?

It sounds sort of like this noise (at the times as per the comment), but more regular and more random sounding. Obviously the Fabia doesn't have a DISA valve though....

Check AUX belt?

Thanks. I'll let them know. It does sound kind of like this one but without the hissing and chirping noises, just the metallic clanking kind of noise...

Probably the DMF. Mine has the same, will go away once the clutch and DMF are replaced

Does it go away when you push in the clutch. If it is then its that.

I'd check the alternator pulley. I'd bet its not free wheeling in one direction anymore.

Clutch is new uprated helix with new dmf. Prob got 15k on it if that. As per original post.... Clutch pedal has no effect on noise. Don't think its that.

Any easy way to test alternator pulley techie ? Anything visual? Or take belt off?

Insert a small screwdriver into the back of the alternator and try very carefully to turn the fan blade. It should spin one way but not the other

Brill, thanks. I'll give it a go when I'm next over there.

should the alternator continue to spin when the engine it turned off? my alternator fan will spin one way with a screwdriver but stopped immediately with the aux belt when the engine is turned off

Only try to move the alternator with engine off

Just because it moves doesn't mean it's fine, it just means it isn't completely seized.
