What is an EGR and an N18??

Featured Replies

Someone said i may need the N18 on my EGR replaced. What are these? and where are they?

EGR=Exhaust Gas Recirculation - part of the emission control system (basically makes the car swallow some of its own poo :P ). N18 will be some kind of valve associated with that system. Someone more expert will be along in a minute , no doubt.

I have just been out having a look around the EGR valve. I removed the black rubber pipe and had a look inside. There was black tar/oil residue on the inside of the black hose and Valve but when i closed the valve manually there didn't seem to be any obstructions.

When i put everything back together, i started the car and then gradually accelerated 2 or 3 times. I looked at the valve when i was accelerating but the arm which closes it didn't move, even when i revved to 2,500 rpm. Is this normal??

Also, when the car was idling and i gently touched the accelerator i heard a loud click. Every time i let the car idle and then put light pressure on the accelerator, this happened. The noise seemed to come from around or below the EGR valve.

I'm even more confused now

If there are any 110 TDI owners reading this, can they please tell me if this is common.

Cheers
