Excessive blue smoke - buying advice

Featured Replies

Good evening folks

I went to look at a Octavia Elegance 2.0 140 tdi this weekend and on test driving (on the way to get fuel) the car constantly smoked blue smoke for about four minutes (even going 50mph). a cloud clearly seen from the rear, salesman was even going to return at one point.

After the engine had got warm it stopped smoking after four minutes or so. When we returned the sales man revved up to the red line and not a small amount came out. No sign of blue smoke.

He said it had been sat for a few Weeks would this fit with the symptoms?

Also, not sure if related, the turbo whistle could be heard inside car, nothing like my present be 1.9 tdi.. Is this normal?

Car comes with full skoda history and a warranty but just seemed a little off.

Cheers

My 2.0 TDi was left to idle for a good 30-45 mins before Christmas.

The next time I took it out it too was throwing out a lot of blue smoke, but only for around 5 to 10 seconds.

If the car you drove had been sat on the forecourt and only ever starting to shuffle it around then there is a chance some oil could have leaked past one of the seals in the turbo and into the exhaust. As you drove it and got some heat through the exhaust / turbo it burnt off the oil.

I'd be tempted to try another cold start to see if it happens again.

I'd also say it is abnormal to hear any turbo whistle inside the car with the windows closed.

I guess it depends on your hearing.

Both our Octavia's have some kind of audible whistling.

The turbo fitted to my vRS whistled from new.

I can certainly hear mine with the window open, but it's not noticeable when the windows are shut. The vRS must run higher boost than my standard PD 140........perhaps that could account for it.

Certainly compared to my 1.9 TDI Fabia the Octavia's whistle is not noticable. It is more noticeable in the Fabia.....but the Fabia is built to a price and I think has poorer sound insulation than the Octavia, so perhaps not a true comparison.

Plenty of cars without any issues at all, why take the risk?

It comes from a main dealer with a 12 month warranty so if it was something they could fix it seemed otherwise a great car. But I'd point it out as to needing fixing

I personally would steer well clear of it and look for another car. A lot of warranties on second hand cars exclude the turbo so if it is kaput then you will have to pay for a new one.
