Where has 1st gone :(

Featured Replies

Not having alot of luck so far this year!

To the point, my car has been difficult (hard to engage) to secect first and second for quite a while now, sometimes causing me to grind 2nd gear when pulling away quickly out of a junction etc. Last night, I "spiritly" accelerated away from a set of traffic lights, again grinding 2nd gear. Thought nothing of it as usual, until I needed 1st on a hill. Nothing there, like im pushing against the side of the box in neutral. I have tried pushing fairly hard, but I fear I will snap the gear stick.

What has confused me, is the fact that now I can select 2nd easily without any resistance from the box. Could this just mean I have to "reset" the gear linkage, or am I looking at a problem inside the box.

Look forward to any replies.

Oh dear.

Hearing about these problems more and more now.

We had the same problems we tried:

Had garage place some washers under shift lever as it had play in it

Re-align selector lever

Change gear oil

No change. All other gears were fine though.

It eventually completely went. New gearbox required for us.

There is also a common problem of the pins on the selector fork inside the box coming loose.

Get it to a garage asap to have it diagnosed.

Check gear linkage first.

Cheers guys. I shall try the link "reset" first, seriously have my fingers crossed on this one. If not, its off to a gearbox specialist :/

Dont suppose anyone has a link handy to a how-to guide for this? Cant find one

There's a video giude on Youtube relating to a golf but using the same shift mechanism.

Should take about 10-15 mins to do.

You may need to remove the air intake pipe to get access under the bonnet.

Still need to do this on mine...

I've seen the locking holes on the gear leaver in the car, but can't see the locking pin on top of the gearbox.

Has anyone on here actually reset the linkages on the vrs 6 speed box?

Depending which box you have (I'm guessing the same as mine on the Cordoba FJW) then there is a little push pin on the side of the lever on the box. You might need to remove battery box and air intake to see it clearly.

You just hold the lever down then push the pin in. It's unlikely it will be the little lever you turn but possible.

If it doesn't go freely then down force it. Mine was jammed and tried using a pair of pliers and snapped it off!

Can this be messed up in any way?

I don't want to attempt it, only to **** it up, and loose all gears?

So long as you follow my guide and don't really force the locking lever/pin on the gear box then no you can't mess it up...........I think Haynes only give it a 2 or 3 out of 5 for difficulty

The only way it can be messed up is if you force and break something. Otherwise it's dead easy as both the gear stick and lever are locked in a pre-defined positon no no way of getting it wrong really.

SLIGHT UPDATE

Yesterday afternoon, I tried to engage 1st whilst rolling about 5mph. After a little bit of force, and some strange feeling (as if i could feel the cogs bouncing before engaging) it engaged first.

Now I can select first without much hassle, all be it very stiff. Getting it out of first it very stiff aswell, including engaging second. But after coming out of second, say to 3rd and then back to second, its normal.

Could resetting the linkages work?? Or does it sound like something in the box is going.

There are no strange noises from the box in any gear, and no "cog feeling" now when selecting first.

Cheers

Mike this weekend we shall tackle your Gear Linkage! We must not fail :p

It is worth a shot but I'm not convinced if it is but like I said we shall give it a go anyway.

You also need to have your flywheel looked at because I think thats buggered..
