Scout goes "Bong"!

Featured Replies

Hello All

Thought I'd ask a quick question as it's baffling me at the moment. For a while now (since last service?) my Scout makes a rather loud "Bong" sound when I unlock it and stops when I turn on the ignition. This sound continues every few seconds after unlock until I start it up. Any ideas?

It never used to do this so I wonder if something has been activated / deactivated that was not in that state before?

Seatbelt warning, low battery or outside temperature?

Not seatbelt warning and with the mild weather we're having, certainly not outside temp. It starts making this sound as soon as it's unlocked, before I have even opened the door and stepped in.

As for low battery, it's less than 3 years old and I've had no starting issues or fault lights come on.

Just strange that this noise starts up as soon as I unlock the car and open any door or turn on the ignition.

Another cause is parking lights, for example if you leave the indicator set to either left or right and get out.

Haha. That's had me scratching my head before even on the Cordoba... car beeps... but the lights are turned off! Took a few mins to realise it was the indicator!

My vRS did this last weekend when I left my stereo on for a couple of hours while cleaning the cars. Wouldn't stop until I started the engine. I had no idea what it was for a while either, then eventually put 2 + 2 together!

As to why your battery may be low, that's a different thing entirely...

As above, if it isn't the parking lights its a warning for a dying battery.

Thanks folks.

Kansalis, I think you may be right. Not had any warning lights or starting problems though.

I did fit a dashcam a while back and thinking about this, the noise did start after I fitted it. I have changed the parking mode sensitivity today so it doesn't record the slightest movement and I'll see how it goes. It also only seems to do it when the car is only used for short journeys and has sat idle for a couple of days, rather than the usual 100 mile round trip commute, so I think the dashcam might be draining the battery due to it's constant recording. Hopefully the settings adjustments I made will cure it and use less power when the car is parked.

I think you've found your issue!
