Replacing battery on 52 reg 1.9 tdi comfort

Featured Replies

The battery has been working fine on our car up until last weekend. Hubby spent the day upgrading headlight bulbs & fitting LED Daytime driving lamps( other road users can't see us!!). During the course of this, doors were left open & radio on. When it came to starting up to check that the lights worked, the battery was as dead as a dodo. We tried jump starting & it didn't want to know. After several attempts of this, I called out RAC. He managed to use his power pack on it & it started first time. We have been warned that the battery could die completely in the next few weeks. We have started to shop around but have come across a couple of problems.

1) the size of battery. There doesn't appear to be much lee way for a bigger battery.

2) the amps. Our local dealer has informed us that we must have a battery with at least 80amps to start our big engine.

I've found 1 on line which has a 4 year warranty & is 88 amps which I thought would be ideal but it's 354mm long & our current 1 is only 310mm.

Has any one else had any similar problems with the size of a replacement battery? Any makes that you would recommend?

The dealer has quoted just under £135 for 1 with a 3 year warranty.

Many thanks in advance for any help received!

see this post because you need to take the battery tray out and clear out the drain bungs that can cause the water problem, best to do it whilst you're at it

You can fit a bigger 85Ah battery into your car in place of the smaller original battery, but you need to get a bigger battery bracket from VW/Skoda parts dept (or scrapyard). Part numbers are

8D2 803 123 B for larger batteries (310mm, 110TE)

8D2 803 123 A for small batteries (270mm 067TE)

Both listed here in the 3yr old thread with lots of good other info on why Varta/Bosch older tech batteries may not be the best choice http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/148111-battery-replacment/#entry1851892

My favourite for many years has been Exide EA852. I had it in 2 Skodas so far and it is a lot longer lasting than OEM Bosch/Varta, plus it is genuinely maintenance free, as opposed to Bosch/Varta water refill caps hidden under a sticker. On the 2.5TDI Superb I had to add ~600ml of distilled water after 2nd winter into the OEM battery as a 3 or 4 cells ran close to exposing plates. No such problems with current and earlier Exides (I used XP07 in the Octy, and currently use EA852 in the Superb and EA770 in the Roomster).

I'm also using the "roto fix" battery in boot connected to the power plug.

What's that?

I don't know how to formulate it differently. A car battery in the boot of my car, which is connected to the power plug to feed the cars electrical system. Oh and a 60A fuse between the plug and the battery.

Interesting, but... why?

Add more juice to the car. :-)

Add more juice to the car. :-)

Is that because you are running some kind of engine heater for extreme cold, or just because your cigarette lighter socket looks like a christmas tree?! :)

Haha, option 2.

Eurocarparts have a sale on right now. 20% off batteries using ALL20 code. Just got a Bosch S4 72ah for £69 delivered with a 4 year warranty.

I'm thinking about a new battery. I see the latest technology seems to be AGM - but the amps are usually slightly lower. Pro's / con's from anyone?

If you have one of these, never let it go flat - if you do make sure you have the correct charger to charge it. (from an MK1 MX5 owner).
