Stage 2? FMIC q's

Featured Replies

Right, I was thinking of getting rid of the 'nana, but having had the cambelt/waterpump recently replaced and sorting my knocking suspension, it seems daft to sell it for peanuts.

So now I'm thinking of going stage 2. I'm guessing all I need is a decat DP? (I have a friendly MOT centre) and a FMIC, my question is which is the good ebay special FMIC that people are using? I don't want to spunk £500 on one, when the car isn't worth that much......

Cheers

Mike

You don't actually need a decat for stage 2 but recomended is a at least a downpipe and sports cat and a good performance exhaust. Also a better intercooler which you have so that is about it.

I don't have an uprated FMIC mate, still on the old SMIC

I'm after recommendations on FMIC's that won't leave my wallet feeling violated

Dam was reading another thread buddy.

There are a few smic upgrades you can use that will allow direct fitting to existing holes or go for a diy fmic but expect to have some fitting issue's

Or if you are not stuck for funds a forge, pro alloy, abd are well known excellent

Fmic's.

toyosports on ebay are very good for the money...very little pressure drop, bit heavy though! if you went for a single pass toyo you would have to use a few silicone bends to fit it. also re route and fabricate a new boost pipe over to the passenger side near the battery! it may also need mounts welding on the crashbar as well as cutting shed loads out to allow a 600x300mm s/p cooler to fit! probably £650-700 to do it right!! you wont have to go that big though..maybe 450x225?

thats a lot Mark, considering off the shelf forge can be had for 500 something, and an uprated smic can be bought for about half that...

650-700 is a serious amount of cash for a stage 2 normail road car imo

yeah thats way too much really. I'd want to try and go stage 2 for under £500 if poss. It's not that I'm tight, I just can't justify spending more on a car that isn't worth all that much.

i done mine for around £300. all custom piping on a twin pass and the temps are always mental low. could prob do a similar set up using a toyosports.

heres my custom set up on its test fit.

thats just a guide based on what mine cost me! toyo cooler was £120,silicone pipes and ally joiners were £160,shotblastin/powdercoating crashbar £25,custom tig welded 63mm one piece boost pipe £200(made by F1 company!),the rest was labour for fitting, cutting crashbar, welding, removing bumper, trial fitting/mock up etc about £150-£200.seems quite cheap in labour terms really!! it need'nt cost that much to do yourself,if i could weld and had a good grinder to cut the crashbar i could have done it myself and saved £200! just because the toyo coolers are only £80-£100 odd,it does'nt meen that installation will/can be done properly for little money...looking above, the toyo fmic is actually the cheapest part of the lot LOL!!

when i went to stage 2 from stock it cost me £1830. that was for 3" milltek turbo back exh, pipercross panel filter, forge 007p,forge fmic kit,p-torque st2 map.that was as cheap as i could get it at that time, maybe two and half yrs ago!

i'd be tempted to get a side mount IC from the states, much cheaper (and easier than making a custom setup) and no chance introducing extra lag as no extra pipework.

absolutly 0 lag on my car. SMIC are no good for stage 2 either. If twin pass is good enough for companies like Forge and THS then its good enough for me. :)

I'll be going Stage 2 soon as soon as i sort out a new downpipe. Everything else is fitted! I got my THS cooler for a very reasonable price off here and it always has low temps. Half the price of similar forge coolers too. Worth a look at if you pop over to a Golf/Leon forum as they were mainly fitted to them I believe.

I know it's a shot in the dark but keep your eyes open for a second hand job or someone breaking a octy, I got a forge for £300 from someone breaking a octy! With the side mount It's the same as saying do u want budget or mid range tyres, they look the same but everyone knows they ain't the same.

Ths was my first choice!

you can go stage 2 on an uprated smic, i did!

Aye you can do, dubdean on here has a Forge SMIC and he runs a stage 2 shark map!

tho under extreme use, ie on track a front mount will win in the long run. Still, for everyday driving the uprated smic was a great improvement.

Isnt the main issue just heat soak ?

So u just get limited fun :D

Much like life lol

Sorry didn't mean to insult uprated side mount owner's, just meant if you are going to upgrade either front or side I've always found its better to save a little more and get something that isn't Chinese and you won't end up regretting it in the long run :)

temps can be very low on forge and ths twin pass fmic kits, its the pressure drop that makes them pointless on anything over stage 2....they will lose like 6-8 or more psi! that means if you have a stage 2 map holding 20psi,you could be getting as little as 12-14psi at the throttle body! it just makes the turbo work harder, meaning it will get hotter! people have long advocated that k03s cars wont do more than 235bhp on stage 2,if a really well put together car went and got really well mapped (ahem,r-tech) to stage 2 with a good single pass cooler i think it would nudge 250bhp!! there you go,i said it!!!
