Retrofit of towbar and rear PDC

Featured Replies

Has anyone in here retrofitted OEM PDC and/or an OEM towbar? I would like to know specific where to connect the wires on the CAN gateway and BCM. Diagrams are welcome too :)

Only just seen the thread.

I did DIY the towbar but I had the factory prewire so the CAN was already in the rear quarter.

However I did find instructions available on the net that explained how to do it, for example Westfalia make a wiring kit and there are instructions. I don't have them as I just plugged in!

I'd be interested in knowing how to DIY a towbar for a 2009 Superb II Greenline...

In this case it is you, who is not a "do it yourself type"! If you would spend a few minutes Googling, you would find many Tow-Bar & Electrics manufacturers who all have comprehensive installation guides as downloads on their websites.

During my own search for an S2 tow-bar I found at least four different sets of mounting instructions from different manufacturers, and this search didn't even include the UK-specific ones.

After reading all those instructions carefully I successfully installed my own Westfalia tow-bar with modified and improved original-Skoda electrics.

The instructions for the bar are available too. Many sellers have the instructions on their websites , for exampl p f jones.

Maybe, but can you find something for the PDC? I cannot. I have found diagrams for the towbar.

I just got the genuine Westfalia bar fitted to mine 2weeks ago my Fathers work West End Skoda. Now rather than paying Skodas £700 I opted to have a guy called Liam Briggs who was recommended by them come to the dealer and fit the Skoda bar and use his own electrics. Cost was reduced to£355. However it doesn't switch the pdc off so I have to hit the mute button when reversing. Not a big deal when I have save nearly £300 though. Very tidy work the cut out on the bumper is not visible unless you got down on your hands and knees to inspect. Electrics fold up and I think its much better engineered thsn the Thule bar I had on my vRS.

I've done front and rear OEM PDC/OPS on an Octavia.

Connect the CAN wires from the PDC kit to the CAN wires as close to the CAN gateway as you can.

Another wire to the fuseboard for power, one to the ESP switch for illumination, a couple of earth wires and that's about it IIRC.

What else do you need to know?

Color or numbers for the wires on the CAN gateway?

CAN pin diagram attached for an Octavia. AFAIK, the Superb is essentially the same wiring, at least the colours used will be even if the pins on the CAN gateway aren't.

Look here for answers: but basically wires for powertrain CAN (that you need to connect PDC & towbar wiring to) should be Orange/Brown (CAN low) & Orange/ Black (CAN high).

A makeshift fix to PDC buzzer making noise when towing/carrying is to fit a resistor in series with the buzzer to quiet it down to inaudible, and a locking on-off switch in parallel to resistor to bypass it for normal use. Much simpler than CAN coding unless you have a car already pre-wired for towbar and use factory electrics kit.

Don't remember resistor value, but I think it's somewhere in 1k range. The buzzer goes quiet, the radio still shows obscured rear sensors so reminds that towbar is busy, and as long as the resistor value is small enough there are no error codes registered.

I used a small round black push button on-off switch, fitted on B Pillar, passenger side in the Roomster (on Superb the buzzer might be somewhere else, rear quarters or driver side pillar, use your ears to find it). The whole job took about 15min incl 1 panel removal/replacement. It is out of the way in normal use.

: but basically wires for powertrain CAN (that you need to connect PDC & towbar wiring to) should be Orange/Brown (CAN low) & Orange/ Black (CAN high).

Colours are right for powertrain CAN, but PDC is on comfort CAN as far as I know. It certainly is on other VAG models.

Mines connected to the two orange wires that leave the CAN gateway with no issues (in fact, everything I've read says that's what to do).

Perhaps I should have said that it can also be fitted to the bi-xenon connector which is Orange / purple [(T-26) Pin 2 is CAN High] and Orange brown [Pin 3 is CAN Low - all CAN low is orange brown irrespective of which drive system is in use on CAN high). I believe that this is on the BCM, but on this one I am not certain!

I know mines an Octavia not a Superb, but aren't all VAG cars basically wired the same?

Read this thread detailing what I learned about fitting PDC / OPS the hard way (seems I was talking to myself last year) and this thread on My GTI

Orange purple with orange brown is comfort CAN, so that makes sense. Your are right about CAN lo although they are not all connected together, you must use the particular one that is twisted with the orange / something that is the right bus. You have to use the right bus otherwise it won't work as the speed of the CAN is different, 500kbaud on powertrain, 100kbaud on comfort. And yes, all VAG vehicle use a very similar system though newer ones have a faster comfort bus.
