possible turbo problems

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I have an intermittent problem with the car.

About 12 months ago it was doing the same so the garage put the computer on it and it was showing over boost on the turbo, the codes were reset, and it's more or less been fine until the last week.

When my car unfortunately ate it's cambelt and the garage had it in bits I asked the mechanic to see if the turbo was ok, he said it seemed ok, didn't feel much play on the shaft etc, but it makes a 'pinking' sound when I put the boot down. there's no smoke or owt, and it's fine in 1st and 2nd. But when it gets to 3000 revs in 3rd it holds back and then drops power in all gears. If I switch it off and start it again, it's fine, till I do it again.

It's no good for accelerating onto dual carriageways or motorways but the only good side effect is the fuel economy is better!! As a taxi driver I do a lot of fast road driving and need that acceleration in 3rd and 4th. It's in for a minor service this week so am going to get them to check it out with the computer again, and reset the codes..the top half of my engine is brand new, so before I have to cough up for a turbo, thought I'd run it by you helpful lot and see if you have any ideas???

Thanks loads in advance

I think you'll probably need to wait 'til you get the codes scanned before you'll know what's going on. Might not be bad news if the turbo can spool up and could be something simple tripping it into limp mode.

Pinking as in pre-ignition if it was a petrol? Would inaccurate fuel pump timing possibly cause this? Complete guesswork on my part.

How much damage did the cambelt eating do?

Gaz
