Octavia steering column control module problem

Featured Replies

I have a very weird problem with a 2005 1.9 pd 1z octavia

Initially the car just cut out, i found that the main relay in the under bonnet fuse box wasn't being triggered. I bodged in a remote relay to do a few tests and i could start the engine fine. but all manor of weird things were happening, the engine driven fan running randomly amongst other things.

At this time there was no intersting codes in any of the ecu's

So i repaced the under bonnet fuse box, and it keyed straight up.

problem solved for a couple of weeks and about 2 thousand miles.

Then it came back in completely dead, no ignition lights no cranking nothing, no comunication with major ecus.

pushed in at night, turned key next morning started first turn, a couple of days starting fine the problem re-occured.

I had a look through the ecu's and theres no comunication with the steering column control module, the reset counter was at 140 odd times.

ordered the module and one of my mechanics fitted it, but before i talked to him he turned the key and it started fine.

but the steer assist light is on and there is no comunication with the steering column control module or the steering angle sensor.

Any ideas?

or even better a pin out for the steering column module!

old part number and new part number?

The new steering column control unit is 1ko 953 549 A, and the new one is 1ko 953 549 AM

I have had similar problems. First sign air con cuts out. Then you have no main beam, electric windows, indicators, reversing sensors. After this when cab temp goes up complete engine failure. All indications of a flat battery with no dash lights. Then when slightly cooler a staccato starter turn and eventually engine starts.Skoda unable to discover fault using computer technique. If the fault is not showing then computer cannot find the fault.

An independent garage after much digging around found that if you heated up the steering column electronic control unit which is coupled to the ignition switch when engine is running the out put gradually fails and all the fault symptoms reappear.

Skoda could not find this but are replacing the unit.

Unit part numbers are the same as yours but different suffix letters.

I eventually tracked it down to one of the permanent live feeds to the steering column control module. The wire had broken mid loom just into the main dash loom.

I have had similar problems.symptoms start with loss of air con and display. Then no windows, indicators, main beam, no reversing light or sensors and then complete engine cut out. Having now stopped their is no dash display and the battery will not crank. The car is completely disabled. When the car starts to cool down the dash display returns and shortly after the engine will crank with a noisy starter but will cut out again All this seems to happen when the car is hot. Skoda has had at least four attempts to find the fault but failed.

I have had an independent garage with old style mechanics look into my problem which has been going on for two years and they eventually exposed the column control module and heated it up with engine running. The fault reappeared.Three times in a row.I have yet to find out what this garage bill will be but will include ECU checks and a new engine compartment fuse box.

Skoda now reenter the scene via customer services. Two days ago they took the car again and I emailed them to try the hair dryer test which they did and the faults reappeared. Yesterday they changed the unit and returned the car to me this morning.

I am using the car but confidence in the car has yet to return.

Cost . To Skoda over two years about a thousand pounds and all the time I was told that we will try this but we cannot guarantee a cure. As I have said I haven't received the bill from the independent garage but it will certainly exceed five or six hundred if not more.

I will never buy another Skoda and will actively discourage anyone from buying one.

It is only just over two years ago my abs light and esp

Igjt stayed on. £1500 was going to be the bill. Reduces to £70 or half the labour charge when I got the press involved.Sunday Post Raw Deal. Oh yes Audi and VW owners were having the fault related free. Skoda owners were being charges £1500.
