rear barakes

Featured Replies

Had the rear brakes replaced by a local garage recently, and since then there has been a rattle from the drivers side.. it's been back to them once but they didn't fix it. I'm going to give then one more chance.. I've been in and stripped the caliper off and had a look around to see if I could trace the rattle.

My question is should there be anti-rattle springs/shims/things fitted to the top AND bottom of the carrier? My memory says that there should be, but currently there is only one, and if so I guess this is causing the rattle.

There probably should be. However a build up of rust can cause the pads to be tight so some places remove one to prevent sticking rather than cleaning the carrier. I haven't done brakes on the roomy, but I have on other VAG products and they all had two.

To find out if that's your rattle, jack up the car and try turning the wheel back and forth. You will hear the pads moving if it is. I once had this years ago, though on the front of a Rover. Replaced almost the entire front suspension before I found it was the pads.
