Nightmare scenario - Flat tyre in the Snow!

Featured Replies

I came back to my Yeti Urban this afternoon, to find the drivers side rear tyre completely flat.

I'd been driving at fairly high speed on the M1 earlier in the day and hadn't noticed any instability, so presume I must have run over something sharp, after leaving the motorway.

I'm currently running Hankook Winter i*cept evo's (205/55/16 94V XL) on steel rims and had just spent the last few days, driving in all the snow, marvelling at their abilities. I'd previously run a 1.2 TSi Yeti through the winter snow (on 17" summer tyres) and had got stuck on a number of occasions. This time I thought I was prepared!

Perhaps prophetically I'd actually had a discussion with a friend recently, regarding the likelihood of a puncture and the suitability of the space saver (non winter) spare tyre :wonder:

In the cold and wet I resigned myself to changing to the spare and set about emptying the boot of all the assorted paraphernalia, which seems to gather.

I found the tyre was actually punctured on the inner sidewall, just outside the tread. I'm not sure what could have caused this, although guess vandalism is unlikely, given the damage was to the inner sidewall. I did briefly consider the relative merits or using the tyre "gunk", as the tyre is not repairable, although decided I'd be better off (and safer??) driving on the space saver spare. This is limited to 80 kmh (50 mph) and is a different size (195/65/15). I've had x2 Yeti's and specified the spare tyre kit each time, although never had cause to use it, until now!

Anyway made it home (driving at no more than 50 mph) on x3 winters and x1 different sized non-winter tyre :whew:

Just looked online and it appears Camskill are cheaper, by quite a margin, than all the others.

Roll on next week and the return to x4 identical winter tyres.

sorry about your bad news and glad you made it home safely. On the plus side, less pressure will give you better traction ;)

That's the second winter Hankook lost to side wall damage this year :wonder:

Glad you got home safe and managed to find a replacement.

TP

Sorry to hear your news. Similar problem happened to me 2 weeks ago (see thread 'driving on the spare tyre'). I found clickontyres to offer a quite speedy replacement service (avoid mytyres!)
