TFSI vs TSI Problems?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Still like my 07 TFSI, it goes really well and prefer its looks to the FL but at 58000 miles, whilst it's never had any ABS/DV/Air con problems, its warranty is running out and I would consider a 2 year old TSI to tide me through to a 12-18 month old MkIII VRS (if I like it). Of course I can just keep my TFSI and have another warranty or risk it,, it isn't yet 6 years old. Before I do anything too daft, can the 2.0 TSI owners confirm if the oil filler cap gets winter mayo from short journeys like the TFSI and besides the few cases of cam tensioner failure, are there any other obvious problems. Particularly interested to hear from ex TFSI owners who now have the TSI to see if it really is that different. It's all Steve750's fault for turning my head with the recent chain of threads :giggle: yes I know I won't get much on trade in or sale despite it being very clean.

Are you selling yours then  ?

I'm in the market for one at the right price.

I went from a vRS TFSi to a vRS CR to vRS TSI and had no problems with any of them (apart from the CR being a bit slow but that's another issue!). Did nearly 20k in my TSi, had it remapped from new, and drove it like I'd stole it most the time. Mostly short journeys on a daily basis, 7 or so miles to and from work, but did do quite a lot of motorway miles in it too. The cam tensioner failure issues are few and far between but it would play on my mind if I had one out of warranty at 60k+ miles.

Tks Jonno. Still would like to know about the mayo from any TSI owners.

Get one. Does that help?

If it's remapped and the chain tensioner fails you might find your warranty cover a bit lacking!

Test drive pending, I am about to, it still doesn't tell me if the Mayo is an issue Judging by the lack of replies from a normally vociferous forum, I take it that it is not an issue.

Never seen any sludge or mayo on my tfsi if that helps?

Not really. I asked about the TSI.

As a general suggestion if TSI owners are concerned about the cam chain tensioner failing why don't they consider having it swapped at the end of their warrenty by a main dealer. that way they'd get a further 2 years warrenty on the tensioner. Might be a tad expensive but would give peace of mind and would eb a lot cheaper that paying for a new engine?

All engines will suffer from ‘mayo’ under the oil cap if it is only doing short journeys, this is simply down to the engine not getting ‘really’ warm to burn off the condensation inside the engine.

The other thing that direct injection (fuel being injected directly into the cylinder, rather than the traditional way through the inlet manifold) engines suffer with is carbon build up on the backs of the inlet valves, again this will effect all DI engines, some worse than others.

Where are these chain tensioner problems?

No mayo in mine, oil stays like maple syrup !

In addition, I am getting 2-3 mpg improvement already. Hardly scientific I know, but it's a welcome bonus.

Thanks fir all the replies. I placed a deposit on a 11 reg car this afternoon. The way I see it, I will have an updated model of a car I already really like until I am ready to go for the Octy mk III VRS. Given that it should be better quality, a bit lighter and more powerful, if the 220bhp engine is installed, I want to get a 12-18 month old one. I suspect it will also cost a bit more also.

What 220bhp engine?

Not really. I asked about the TSI.

My TSI hasn't either, but its only a week old!

That's fighting talk!!

I had a TSi vRS for 2 years / 22000 miles & never had any problems with mayo on filler cap. Most (80%) of my journeys were urban or relatively short.

I thought it was a fantastic engine, even better mapped ;)

With regards the cam problems, I believe they are being over exagerated based on the number of cars this engine is used over all of the VAG range. Cam belts fail too, even well maintained ones.

Don't let a rare occurance put you off buying what is a fantastic car :)

I have never noticed any Mayo on the filler cap, I mainly do a 15 mile round trip a day to work, the car is over 3 years old (31000mls) and no issues with the engine. never owned or driven a TFSI so cant comment on that.

Tks Jonno. Still would like to know about the mayo from any TSI owners.

Had my TSI from new since early Nov 12, usually does around 20/30 minute 11 mile commute each way x5 days/week. About 2 miles heavy crawling traffic, 5 miles straight urban A road, then last 4 miles on 50mph + dual carriageway although after the traffic bit I can take a winding B road sometimes which is slower but does keep the fuel consumption down. Have so far done about 1400 miles in the wet and now cold weather, including some very short stop starts - less than 2 mile trips.

No sign of any mayo to date, but maybe crawling in traffic for the first part each day gets the engine warmed up and oil circulated well, even if it kills the fuel consumption :( !!

HTH

I feel he maybe referring to the talk of the mk3 having 220 bhp, correct me if I'm wrong though.

Yes I am only guessing, having read some of the recent reviews. Honest John was the last. I'd expect the new engine to be more powerful long as it doen't overshadow VW Audil. Let's see what happens. If it's good I will buy one, if not then I will stick with what I like.

Why don't you pass go and collect £400 of remap? Word is you can expect 250bhp ish or thereabouts, which is more than the TFSI. Much cheaper than buying a pathetically small fuel tanked new car, what were they thinking!

My guess is CO2 emissions - no spare wheel, smaller fuel tank, less sound proofing, slightly thinner body panels, more plastic etc etc. Few grams here and there adds up. All about meeting emission regs, saleability, more mpg and lowering tax bands I suspect. Lugging less weight helps all that.

I wasn't being entirely serious!
